As many of you know, I have spent the last 15 years doing everything I can, serving on local boards, volunteering countless hours to coach youth teams and personally sponsoring many a player so that they could continue to play, all in an effort to bring opportunities to as many kids to play the sports they love. These days sports has become very expensive and it has become more and more difficult for everyone to stay involved. Many kids have been forced to stop playing the sport they love. Growing up, team sports were an integral part of my life and I could not imagine it without them.
In 2019, here in Poway, CA, we created a unique soccer team that would allow some unbelievable young ladies an opportunity to continue playing and competing at a higher level then they might have been previously able to. For everyone that has been around the youth soccer game, you know the huge step up in costs and time that prevent many great kids from having the opportunity to play at that level.
Due to the unique nature of this team, they have struggled to find places to play and have struggled to gain acceptance even in the local soccer community. They have even been told, to go play somewhere else at times. Because of this, the team bears all its own costs, from uniforms, to fields, to lights to train. To find appropriate competition tournaments are entered, but often need to be out of the area, which further adds to the expense for these girls.
Over the course of a season, costs can reach up to and beyond $10,000 - $15,000 to cover everything. In an effort to help fund the team and reduce costs to make this possible, I have taken on coaching the team at no cost (foregoing the usual pay that competitive soccer coaches typically receive), the girls have given their time and dedication to help coach and promote the sport during Poway’s spring season, volunteering every week to help out. These girls are willing to work hard to keep their dream alive, but in the end it gets harder and harder to cover all costs and keep these girls on the field, that’s where you come in.
Someone once said, “it takes a village”….on this team we joke about that as we are carpooling, feeding and taking care of each other’s kids. These girls are like sisters and this team has become a family. We are hoping that by reaching out to our family and friends (our larger village), that we might be able to reach so many people that even small support amounts will add up to help these great girls. The girls would be eternally grateful for anything you might be able to contribute to help and forward sharing and helping to spread the word to provide this great opportunity for them!!
Thank you so much for your consideration and support!
