New Update Summer 2024:
In spite of their efforts to dig out of the hole they were in (and community support,) early last spring horrible luck threw a major wrench in things. MaRico was in a terrible car accident on the way home from a work event, totaling the car he was driving and almost killing him. His heart stopped for a moment in the ambulance but the medics were able to revive him. The list of injuries was extensive, but after multiple surgeries and months confined to a wheelchair, his search for an in-person job(s) has resumed. He is not fully healed, but is able to walk and stand for periods of time with the use of a walking cast. After spending time with him recently, I can't believe how quickly he healed and how strong of a person he is.
As you might imagine, progress was hindered in an enormous way, and the small amount of funds they had for a potential deposit on a place or car are exhausted. Now that a dual income is possible, righting the ship is more in reach. The lack of a vehicle or enough funds to get into an apartment remain as major hurdles. As you might guess, simple transportation to school and work is a logistical puzzle every day without a car.
Thank you so much for reading, and please share with anyone you think might have sympathy for a family in such a situation and the ability to help!
Original Story:
A local Poway family has suffered a string of hardship. Most recently, on February 5th, they lost their vehicle (which was also their shelter.) Please help us get this family of four safely off the street and back on track.
Donated funds will be used directly by the family to secure an apartment and reliable transportation.
From the family: We never thought we would see ourselves in this situation. We were almost there, almost back to where we needed to be - but another obstacle landed in our path that we have not been able to overcome alone. We were living out of our car, and almost had enough saved to get into an apartment.
Our car was impounded, and has been accruing fees daily since it was taken from us. Even if we could have the car towed out of impound, we have nowhere to have it delivered and still do not know what needs to be repaired in order for the car to function properly again. We both have jobs and work as much as we can, but without a vehicle we are stuck with bus routes and unpredictable schedules. We have nowhere to go and have been incredibly blessed by the community providing funds for us to stay at a local motel.
We understand that the current times are difficult for everyone, and we truly do not like asking for help, but we could not tackle this alone. We have two children, aged 5 and 7, that are relying on us to keep them safe. These babies have been through a lot and still thrive both in school and with their peers.
We are working hard to get back on track, but right now we need blessings. We are asking for your help to get us back on our feet so that we can work on getting to a place of our own.
Thank you for reading and we appreciate your time.
Thank you to everyone that has been keeping us safe since February 5th when we would have been sleeping on the street in the rain. We are incredibly appreciative and forever grateful.
