Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) is a condition that affects the autonomic nervous system, which controls involuntary body functions such as heart rate, blood pressure, and digestion. POTS is characterized by an abnormal increase in heart rate when transitioning from lying down to standing up. Typically, when someone stands, their heart rate increases slightly to compensate for the gravitational shift in blood flow, but in POTS, the heart rate increases excessively—often by 30 beats per minute or more.

It can be extremely debilitating with a lot of people diagnosed needing to stop working. With now nearly 1 million Australians suffering we need more research and treatments:

Symptoms of POTS may include:

Dizziness or lightheadedness, especially upon standing

Fatigue

Heart palpitations

Fainting or near-fainting

Headaches

Nausea

Shakiness

The exact cause of POTS isn't always clear, but it can be associated with conditions like autoimmune disorders, chronic fatigue syndrome, and sometimes after infections or physical trauma.

The Australian POTS Foundation is committed to improving outcomes for those with POTS by raising funds for improved research, advocacy and support for those living with POTS. The Foundation is currently run entirely by volunteers.

Beyond minimal running costs, all funds raised will go directly to improving research, education and support for those with POTS in Australia.
