A few months ago I retired from fundraising and organizing on behalf of political campaigns. Since I’ve found a great deal of peace doing courier work for Postmates while applying to various non profits for events and development.
In the early morning of February 23rd, while driving down SW 13th ave, a white Audi ran his red light on SW Clay. I was the second car in line on 13th waiting to go through the intersection. Witnesses said the first car got through, The Audi then came speeding up the block and collided with me. According to police estimates they were going approximately 40mph in a 25. There was no way to see them coming. Witnesses said there was no attempt to swerve to avoid me or to brake. The side impact was exactly on my drivers door. Totaled my car with frame damage, pushed the door in a good six inches, and bounced me off my steering wheel, dashboard and center counsel. The paramedics were rather blunt about how lucky I am to still be here.
I was fortunate with just a broken clavicle and a pretty severe spleen laceration. I’m lucky I wasn’t hurt worse, and didn’t need to have my spleen removed. All credit to Portland PD and the paramedics on scene, their speed of response time literally saved my life.
The officer on scene notified me the owner of the other vehicle has a suspended license and had fled the scene. Hit and run. The passengers said they didn’t know who was driving. They were intoxicated, and then fled the scene themselves. Initially I was told they also did not have insurance, which was a whole different level of mental stress added to my healing, but recently found out they at least have minimum coverage.
I’m not a fan of asking others help for myself, I’ve always been more comfortable asking for help on behalf of others. However, my auto insurance has informed me they won’t be paying out because I was using my vehicle for commercial deliveries at the time. Postmates doesn’t inform you that you need commercial insurance, but I should have known. Having lost my sole source of income, figuring out some significant hospital bills, purchasing a new car, maintaining all the regular bills, all while physically unable to work for six to eight weeks, life just comes at you pretty darn fast..
