post-crash recovery

let's cut straight to it: Adrianne and I need your help as we navigate life post-accident and she continues her recovery journey. if you don't read a single sentence beyond this first paragraph, here's a summary: may 15th,2023, the evening before the launch of my second book, Adrianne White was nearly killed in a car crash that left her with two broken knees and legs, a broken wrist, and broken vertebrae. and the American healthcare system has failed her by kicking her out of a care facility to force her to fend for herself.

the accident caused severe damage and was a total loss of the car. she spent weeks in the hospital having near-daily surgeries. her legs and her wrists were literally shattered. she was essentially, without hyperbole, a bag of bone shards. she came thru with lots of good vibes and prayers from y'all. only to be forced out of the hospital and into a nightmare of a care facility.

that isn't really my story to tell, for various legal and personal reasons, but suffice to say, her recovery stalled. it may have even regressed. after a month being stuck there, she was finally allowed to transfer to a much better place. at least, we thought.

unfortunately the new facility was in such a rush to discharge her they didn't consider things like her inability to use the bathroom alone or the whole 'she literally can't use her legs' of it all. she was in this new facility for approximately 2 weeks. they wanted to let her go after 1. and after fighting with the nightmare place for weeks, Adrianne understandably had no fight left to fight. and so, they booted her home.

it's been less than a week and it's abundantly clear she wasn't ready for discharge. she can't keep up with pills and self care and occupational and physical therapy and household things like bills and food and cleaning. I'm doing my best to help, but I'm not a medical professional and I'm only one person. in order for me to fulfill everything she needs, I would have to make it my full time job - and I'd already taken on her share of home upkeep since the accident. we are drowning and need all the help we can get.

this fundraiser aims to take as much strain off of Adrianne (and myself!) as possible. her bones still haven't healed, she can't bear all of this, y'know? any money raised will be used for:

- rent: our rent is approx. $1500 per month.
- phone: we currently pay about $350 per month for T-Mobile and the subsequent equipment plans for our devices.
- internet: our Internet costs $125 monthly. it's important for obvious reasons but also professionally.
- food: inflation has us at about $400 - $500 per month to feed the two of us plus two cats. and speaking of cats.
- cats: litter for these jerks costs about $60 every couple of months.
other utilities: our ridiculous rent costs don't cover any utilities at all, so things like water, electric, trash, etc. cost around $500 each month. the bulk of that is electric, as heatwaves and other weird weather have made that bill skyrocket.
- home healthcare: based on some research into averages, hiring someone to come in and help with care would be about $3600 a month here in Missouri.
- non-bill care items: she's going to need a lot of things to make life at home comfortable. she needs things like extra bedding, waterproof mattress pads, wipes for cleaning herself and surrounding hard surfaces, non-slip socks, easy-to-change-into clothes, waterless shampoo/conditioner, etc. making a home accessible costs a lot. it takes a lot of effort. and it will also take things to keep her morale and her will to keep going as high as possible.

which leads to the total I'm trying to raise: $50,000. this covers 6 months of everything listed, plus GFM fees. ideally getting a year covered would be so, so relieving, but even just 6 months will be a major blessing.

this does not include medical expenses currently. to tell you the truth, medical bills are the last thing I care about right now; I won't go into a rant about it. but if Adrianne is forced to figure out her own recovery at home after being abused and abandoned by the American healthcare system, then we'll do what we have to to make it work.

it's a big number, I know. but you don't have to cover all of it. every small bit that scoots us closer to goal is invaluable to me, to Adrianne, and to her family. please, if you've read this far, donate whatever you can. share this fundraiser far and wide. forcefully suggest to your wealthy cousins that they ought to help. because we're on our own, and we will go under without your help.
