Portugal's Fire Heroes Appeal

Portugal is blighted nearly every summer by major wildfires, which not only destroy huge stretches of land but also claim human lives.

The memories of 2017’s devastating wildfires in Central Portugal, which resulted in the death of over 100 people, and 2018’s Monchique wildfire, which raged for one week nonstop, are still all too fresh in the minds of many.

This summer, however, firefighters are facing new risks due to the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to recent reports, efforts to reduce large numbers of people in any one space and promote physical distancing will have an impact on the capacity and efficiency of combat teams, whether voluntary firefighters/Civil Protection command posts, or even the pilots of firefighting planes.

Climate change and the fact that vast tracts of national territory are still very susceptible to wildfires are other matters that are concerning specialists.

Parliament’s Technical Independent Observatory says that regional plans for forestry control (PROFs) still need to be followed: large areas of inflammable eucalyptus and pine are meant to be being ‘reforested’ with more fire-retardant trees, like oaks. But with all authorities focused on preventing the spread of the virus, these commitments are being allowed to fall behind.

The Algarve Resident newspaper is, therefore, organising this fundraiser in aid of the Liga dos Bombeiros Portugueses (Portuguese Firefighters League). We are asking our readers to help the country’s firefighters who heroically risk their lives to protect others.

Our goal is to reach the target of €20,000. Any donation, big or small, will be crucial to the wellbeing of firefighters in what promises to be a particularly challenging fire season.

Quase todos os verões, Portugal é assolado por grandes incêndios florestais, que não só destroem extensas áreas de floresta mas causam também dezenas de vítimas mortais.

As memórias dos devastadores incêndios de 2017, que mataram mais de 100 pessoas no centro de Portugal, e do incêndio de Monchique em 2018, que durou uma interminável semana para centenas de bombeiros e povoações afetadas, continuam bem presentes na memória de todos.

Contudo, este verão, os Bombeiros portugueses estão a enfrentar novos riscos e desafios devido à pandemia de Covid-19.

Notícias recentes dão conta dos impactos que a pandemia vai ter na capacidade e eficiência das equipas de combate aos fogos devido aos esforços para evitar aglomerações de pessoas e promover o distanciamento social, afetando o trabalho dos bombeiros, da Proteção Civil e até dos pilotos de aviões e helicópteros de combate a incêndios.

As alterações climáticas e o facto de grandes áreas de território nacional continuarem susceptíveis a incêndios são outros factores que estão a preocupar os especialistas.

O Observatório Técnico Independente da Assembleia da República refere que os Planos Regionais de Ordenamento Florestal (PROF) continuam a ser o instrumento para a redefinição das florestas: extensas áreas de eucaliptos e pinheiros, altamente inflamáveis, devem ser reflorestadas com espécies de árvores resistentes ao fogo, como o carvalho. Porém, com as autoridades focadas em prevenir a difusão do coronavírus, estes compromissos estão a passar para segundo plano.

O semanário Algarve Resident decidiu assim criar esta campanha de angariação de fundos para ajudar a Liga dos Bombeiros Portugueses. Todos os anos, os nossos bombeiros arriscam as suas vidas para proteger a vida dos outros.

O nosso objectivo é chegar a um total de angariações de €20.000. Todos os donativos, sejam eles pequenos ou grandes, serão fundamentais para garantir o bem-estar dos nossos Bombeiros nesta que se adivinha ser uma época de incêndios particularmente desafiante.
