My cousin Shawn & Rachel Oehlert’s son Porter was struck in his mouth by a firework on July 4th causing 3rd degree burns to his lips and hands and he has since been air lifted to Anschutz Children’s Hospital in Denver where he has received reconstructive surgery and treatment to his burns.

Our Fourth of July took a terrifying turn that we never could have imagined. While celebrating with our family, shooting fireworks, one tipped over and ignited all around us. Tragically, a shell struck Porter in the mouth and he received multiple burns.

As we rushed to the hospital, we hit a deer on the way—because when it rains, it pours. From there, we were flown to Children’s Hospital at Anschutz in Denver, where Porter underwent reconstructive surgery on July 5th.

He’s been incredibly brave, and we’re holding tight to hope as we wait to speak with the burn unit tomorrow—burns will likely heal fine.

We’re shaken, overwhelmed, and exhausted—but also so grateful for the quick help we received from CCMH and Anschutz, and for every message, prayer, and bit of support we’ve felt from those who love us. Please keep Porter in your hearts as we take this one step at a time.
