On Friday April 23rd Porter and his cousin E.C. had been playing Magic the Gathering with a group of friends at Patriot Games. At 11:30pm they were heading down North Faudree Road when a drunk driver crossed into their lane and hit them head-on.
Because our local hospital does not have a pediatric orthopedic surgeon on staff Porter was flown via AeroCare helicopter to University Medical Center Children's Hospital for emergency surgery. He had significant internal bleeding and a "bucket handle injury" to the small intestine. The surgeon removed 10cm of the small intestine and cauterized the bleed leaving him with a large vertical scar on his abdomen.
He is currently housed in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and waiting on his next set of surgeries. He has a collar bone fracture that will have to heal naturally. His left arm is in a cast for the break in the elbow. We are waiting on a hard-sole boot for the break in his left foot. On Monday morning the orthopedic trauma team will attempt to repair the pelvic fracture on the left iliac crest and they hope to be able to rebuild the shattered right kneecap.
Porter will be confined to a wheelchair for several weeks as the right arm is in a sling for the collarbone and the left arm is in a cast for the broken elbow. Once his arms are strong enough to support the use of crutches he will gain some mobility but in reality he is looking at 2-3 months before he can start working on walking normally again.
We are blessed to have good health insurance through work but we are expecting the total bill to be above $100,000. Our co-insurance cost will be 20% after we meet the $3,000 deductible.
