On Wednesday, March 24, 2021 my parents in Alabama experienced what would be a worst nightmare for most - a fire destroying the home they were living in. They along with their little grandson was not home during this time; however, they are displaced indefinitely.
The cause of fire is still under investigation, this fire has left the home they have lived in for many years uninhabitable. They are still muddling through the remains of the fire, but they have lost a considerable amount of clothes, furniture and other items to not only the fire, but also to smoke damage.
My parents are always remarkable at navigating incredibly through stressful circumstances. And as they fully acknowledge there are so many positives in such a traumatic life changing situation. Despite there being countless positives (mainly that no one was physically harmed), they are still left picking up the pieces of their previous life and trying to rebuild from scratch.
Many have asked my parents and myself - how they can help. I think it's hard to process when you are experiencing something so upending and I know this will take days, weeks, months for them to fully process all that was lost. If you are able to donate to help provide a bridge for my parents as they navigate the various costs that will not be covered by insurance as well as unforeseen costs, we would be so appreciative.
From talking to others who have experienced house fires, it is most helpful for the Porter’s to be able to purchase exactly what they need versus accepting donations of clothing, bedding, food and other articles. This eliminates them being additionally overwhelmed by having to sort through items and getting too much versus getting only what they need.
