To anyone that knows Patrick O'Rourke, he is a hard headed, stubborn man with a heart of gold.  He loves his family and friends and is always there for them. Pat has always been active in the community as an adult softball coach and also as a player. Pat has been a skilled and passionate carpenter for over 20 years.

Pat has never been good at asking for or accepting help from anyone. So, his immediate family is asking his friends and extended family to help Pat in this time of need and suffering.

Patrick has been sick for months. In December he was diagnosed and treated for the flu. Unfortunately, not all the symptoms went away. The cough got worse making him unable to work, eat or sleep. When the pain became too much, Pat decided to go to the hospital to find out what was wrong.  After a CAT scan in the ER, he was told he had a large mass on his lung. The large mass is putting pressure on his esophagus and upward towards his collarbone.

Two weeks after being hospitalized at the Medical University of South Carolina, three biopsies later and multiple medical specialists, Pat was diagnosed with adenosquamous pulmonary carcinoma. This is a non-small cell lung cancer. This malignant tumor is wrapped around two blood vessels, thus making it too dangerous to remove at it's size. The recommended course of action is chemo therapy, radiation and surgery.

At Pat's first chemo therapy appointment, he was turned away due to the fact he did not have the money to pay for his therapy upfront. Within the next 30 minutes, his family scrambled and came up with the funds to get him started in his treatment. Pat said no cancer patient should ever have to experience that kind of rejection or dismissal.

Pat is starting his second week of treatment in a few days. As we all know, chemo therapy and radiation treatment can be expensive. There is also the cost of nausea medication, pain medication, dietary supplements and a strict undesirable diet (on top of his two week hospital bills). Since Pat's cancer is on his dominant side and his immune system is weakening and compromised, he can not return to work as a carpenter. After Pat completes his 7 weeks of treatment, he may need surgery or more treatment. Once that is over, he has been advised he may need to look for a new line of work. By then it will be six months that he has been out of work with no pay or assistance, maybe longer.

This GoFundMe account is to relieve Pat's stress on worrying how he is going to pay for his medical bills. If there are any funds left over, Pat wants to donate that money to another cancer patient in financial need like him.

Your donation will mean so much to Pat and his family. Thank you for being a part of his life and his recovery.
