My name is María Penalba Torres, and I am a nurse by profession. I want to share our unfortunate story with you. On August 17, 2024, my son, Jeicol Manfredi Penalba, 22 years old and father of a 1-year-8-month-old daughter, suffered a severe accident in the state of Arizona. Jeicol was temporarily in Arizona for work. Unfortunately, while returning to his hotel, he fell asleep at the wheel, lost control of the truck, and crashed into several trees, causing multiple serious injuries. The distance and uncertainty made the waiting agonizing. When I finally saw my son, I was grateful he was alive but devastated by his pain. I faced the harsh reality that no mother should ever experience—the suffering of her child. I clung to God, with nothing left but trust.

Jeicol underwent surgery for facial injuries, a fractured clavicle, knee, wrist, hip, and a left femur broken in four parts. Plates, screws, and implants were placed in each of the injuries. He is currently at Banner Desert Medical Center, 1400 S Dobson Rd, Mesa, AZ 85202. Unfortunately, Jeicol does not have health insurance, so we will have to cover hospital costs, therapy, medication, and medical equipment privately. My son will need to enter a rehabilitation hospital for physical therapy and ongoing medical care in Arizona for an indefinite period. We understand the road ahead is long, difficult, and very expensive, but we remain hopeful.

As a mother, without hesitation, I left my job and my life in Puerto Rico to care for him indefinitely. For this reason, my coworkers took the initiative to create a GoFundMe to help me cover the costs. Many people have been following our journey, even from a distance, and we are deeply grateful to everyone. I am confident that this will pass, and he will recover and be able to return to a normal life.

Mi nombre es María Penalba Torres soy enfermera de profesión. Por este medio quiero contarles nuestra lamentable historia. El 17 de agosto de 2024 mi hijo Jeicol Manfredi Penalba de 22 años de edad y padre de una niña de 1 año y 8 meses sufrió un accidente de carácter grave en el estado de Arizona. Jeicol se encontraba en dicho estado temporeramente por motivos de empleo. Lamentablemente cuando regresaba camino al hotel sé quedó dormido, perdiendo el control de la camioneta impactando varios árboles provocándole multilples heridas graves. La distancia, la incertidumbre hacían una larga agonía y espera eterna. Les cuento que cuando vi a mi hijo estaba agradecida de verlo con vida y destruida por sentir su dolor. Me enfrenté a una dura realidad que ninguna madre quisiera enfrentar, el sufrimiento de un hijo. Me aferré a Dios y solo quedaba confiar.

Jeicol fue operado de una herida en el rostro, fractura en clavícula, rodilla, muñeca, cadera y el fémur izquierdo fracturado en 4 partes. En cada una se colocaron placas , tornillos e implantes. Se encuentra recluido en el Banner Desert Medical Center en 1400 S Dobson Rd, Mesa, AZ 85202. Jeicol no cuenta con seguro médico, por lo cual tendremos que costear el hospital, terapias, medicamentos, y equipo médico de manera privada. Mi hijo luego debe ingresar a otro hospital de rehabilitación en terapia física y seguimiento médico en el estado de Arizona por un tiempo indefinido. Sabemos que nos enfrentaremos a un proceso largo, difícil y muy costoso pero seguimos confiados.

Como madre, sin pensarlo, dejé mi trabajo y mi vida en PR para cuidarlo indefinidamente. Por esta razón mis compañeras de trabajo tomaron la iniciativa de crear un "gofundme" para ayudarme a sufragar los gastos. Son muchas las personas pendientes de nosotros aun en la distancia y estamos muy agradecidos de todos. Estoy confiada que esto pasará y el se rehabilitará y logrará poder incorporarse a su vida de manera normal.
