Pop In for Autism

Donation protected
The Pop-In Cafe, operated by Let's Work for Good, serves homemade popcorn featuring a variety of flavors, ranging from classic to chocolate to jalapeno.

Additionally, Pop-In Cafe employs and trains
autistic adults to work at the store.

Located at the Brunswick Square Mall in New Jersey, Pop-In Cafe provides opportunities for adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder in the areas of cooking and packaging popcorn, preparation of deli style sandwiches, order fulfillment, distribution, and sales.

Our goal
: To develop a unique training plan for each adult with ASD, so he or she can achieve independence at work.

There are 1.5 million people diagnosed with autism in the US.... 90% of adults with autism are either unemployed or underemployed.

Individuals with autism have the ability and desire to work, yet research highlights the urgent need to fix this disappointingly low employment rates for autistic adults.

The Story Behind Pop-In Cafe
Doctors Barbie and Steven Bier responded to this urgent need when their son, Samuel (25), a high-functioning autistic, grew unhappy with his job at ShopRite. Sam worked at ShopeRite for five years, where he bagged groceries and returned carts. One day, Sam came home from work and told his parents that he wanted more for himself. Although ShopRite was extremely accommodating to Sam and his needs...

Sam was bored with his current job and wanted
                    something new that challenges him.

In response to their son's needs, Barbie, a developmental pediatrician who works with autistic kids, and Steven, a radiologist, opened up a popcorn store in the Freehold Raceway Mall. Friends and family came from all over to see Sammy's smile as he worked behind the popcorn counter. Sam had finally found his calling.

Until...

Barbie and Steven lost their lease at the popcorn store. The rent at the Freehold Raceway Mall had drastically increased and they could no longer afford to keep the popcorn store there.

But this did not stop the Biers...

A few months later, Barbie and Steven bought another store location at the Brunswick Square Mall. This time, they were determined to make this store stick for the sake of their son, Sam.

To do this, the Biers hired...
**Agnes Cushing-Ruby: a chef, whose daughter is autistic, to help Sam create new popcorn flavors
**Students: who are working side-by-side with the autistic adults to help them through their tasks
**A marketing team: to create their Pop-In Cafe website where shoppers can buy popcorn and other goodies online (http://popincafe.org
**Autistic adults: across the community looking for employment opportunities

WHY WE NEED YOU!!
The employees at Pop-In Cafe are working tirelessly to not only create a great new brand of popcorn, but also  to provide meaningful and lasting employment for adults with autism.

We cannot let what happened at the Freehold Mall stop the Biers and all the Pop-In workers from making a difference in the lives of autistic adults.

We ask you to donate whatever you can to
help us keep the Pop-In Cafe a reality.

Specifically, we need help to pay rent... although this is not so glamourous, without the Pop-In store, there will be no place for these autistic employees to make the delicious popcorn.

Next... We want to expand!! The store has only been open a month, and we already have a long list of autistic adults who want to work at the store. While this is our dream, we need enough space for all of these determined adults.

Thank you in advance for all of your generous offers!
