On March 22, 2015 the day before Deontae's 30th Birthday he had a very life changing accident while playing semi-pro football; he sustained a very hard hit during the game. Upon being rushed to the hospital in Peoria, IL where the football game took place, it was discovered that Deontae's neck was broke, the doctor's were able to stablize the fracture at the C-1 vertebrae during emergency surgery, but there is still significate fractures in the C-2,3,and 4 vertebrae that will require more surgury. Due to this accident, there is a spinal cord injury and some paralysis on his left side however, the extent of paralysis is not known yet. He is stabalized and is in ICU at St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria, IL. He will remain there for at least 2 weeks until he is stabalized enough to be transported back to Columbia, MO where he resides. Deontae's road to recovery will include more surgery, and extensive therapy that could last 18 months or longer to get him back to the best he can be.
Deontae has 2 young children Dayne and Ava in which he is very active in theirs lives. He works fulltime at Boone Hospital and part-time at the University Medical Center in Columbia, MO. Things will be very tight in keeping up with household bills, doctor bills, rehabilitation expenses just to name a few of the things that will start to pile up.
