Polly's Stroke Recovery

Donation protected
In August 2016 I had a life-altering hemorrhagic stroke that left me paralyzed and without feeling on my left hand side, and caused permanent double vision.  After 1 month of hospital stroke rehabilitation and 4 weeks at a rehab facility, I was able to walk a short distance with a specialized walker, climb stairs, and had trace movement in my hand.  At this point I was sent home, which severely limited my access to much-needed rehabilitative services.

Because of insurance limitations, I have not had access to regular physical therapy but I feel very fortunate to have found Sheltering Arms Physical Rehabilitation.  I participate in the NeuroFit program twice a week, Club Rec twice a week, and go to the rehab gym or pool 1-2 times per week. At NeuroFit I am using the advanced rehabilitation technology to continue the progress already made in therapy in one on one sessions with a trained fitness specialist.  Club Rec is a day program with an open rehab gym and daily programs including fitness classes, yoga, cooking, and crafts. At the Reynolds gym or Bon Air pool I can continue working on cardio and strength training to improve my physical coordination and movement. In addition I go to Samaritan's Walk twice a week for a Whole Body Vibration workout  as recommended by my Physical Therapist to treat my severe spasticity. To help regain function in my hand, my Occupational Therapist recommended a Rapael Smart Glove.   I now walk with a cane and can walk more than a mile on the rehab treadmill. I’m also working with my fitness specialist, Anna, to walk without the cane. Thanks to the wonderful people on my rehab team and the access I have had to specialized rehab equipment, I can now cook, do laundry and drive myself to my activities and appointments.

All of these wonderful programs come with a cost that is not covered by insurance.  In the past two years I have drained my savings with thousands of dollars in medical expenses and even more in rehab costs.  I am working with the Virginia Department of Rehabilitative Services to return to work but in the meantime I receive a monthly disability payment of just over $800 which only covers half of my monthly rehab expenses not including any of my medical expenses or other costs of living. I have made great strides in my recovery and still have very far to go. Without savings or a job and without your help I will have to start eliminating my rehab programs.

Any help you can give will go directly to pay for current rehab expenses of $369 per week. $20 funds one week of Club Rec, $30 funds one week of the Rapael Smart Glove, $90 funds 1 week of Samaritan's Walk Whole Body Vibration workouts, and $229 funds one week of Sheltering Arms NeuroFit including three personal training sessions each with a  Functional Electrical Stimulation bike session along with gym or pool visits. Please help me continue my recovery process!
