Today, we (Gateway Counseling Center) are reaching out to share a heartbreaking story that has touched our close-knit community deeply. Our beloved colleague at our Furman location, Renee Thomas, has recently faced an unimaginable tragedy that has left them without a home and all their belongings.
Just days ago, Renee experienced the devastating loss of their residence. I'm sure everyone has heard about the partial building collapse in the Morris Heights section of the Bronx. Renee resided there with her elderly mother. Thankfully she was escorting her mother to a doctor's appointment at the time of the collapse. In an instant, everything they owned was lost, treasured possessions, family heirlooms, and the very essence of the place they called home.
The emotional toll of such a sudden and catastrophic event is immeasurable. As we approach the holiday season, Renee and her family find themselves displaced, struggling with the challenges of rebuilding their life from scratch. The burden is not just financial but extends to the emotional and psychological toll that comes with losing the very foundation of one's sense of belonging. Her apartment was a place filled with memories, comfort, and the sense of security that we all cherish. To be placed in temporary housing over and over, not knowing if you'll be moved again is something no one should have to worry about.
We are reaching out to you, our community, with a humble request for support.
Your generous contributions will go towards securing housing, replacing essential belongings, and offering a glimmer of hope in the face of adversity.
Every donation, no matter the size, is a step towards helping Renee rebuild their life. Let us come together as a community, wrap our arms around them and show them that they are not alone in this journey.
