Hello everyone,
Thank you for taking the time to visit this page.
I would love to share with you a new business idea in the ever-developing field of Artist Management & Consultation, a subsector of the entertainment industry. It all started with my education at one of the top colleges for the study of entertainment management in the United States, The UCF Rosen College of Hospitality Management where I was, indeed, pursuing a BS in Entertainment Management. Like any student wondering what future they want to pursue after college, I spent countless hours deciding how I want to apply the skills and abilities I both had and acquired in my studies in a meaningful way. This idea of a company is the culmination of those harrowing thoughts. Fascinatingly, it all started with one word:
Pneuma
Pronounced (noo-muh)
Defined as - (in Stoic thought) the vital spirit, soul, or creative force of a person.
This word perfectly encapsulated what I desired to protect and uphold in myself when I entered this industry. As I continued my education, however, I realized that Pneuma, that oh-so-vital creative spirit, is what I not only wanted but needed to uphold in others and the field of entertainment. Why is this important? For those uninitiated in the field of entertainment, especially in the music industry sector, one of the first things to die in a person is a passion for your craft unless it is backed by discipline and grit. Countless amazing creative and passionate souls have been stolen from, lied to, and overall stamped out under the bloodstained foot of corporate interests in the entertainment industry. Famed American journalist and author Hunter S. Thompson once wrote “The music business [and greater entertainment industry] is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side.”
Upon learning this, my immediate goal was to safeguard my pneuma alongside those with whom I worked. Eventually, I discovered that there is more value and righteousness in igniting, maintaining, and/or protecting other creative people's pneuma. With this goal in mind, my junior year of college I started to work on what exactly this company would mean. I studied how I would ensure ethical operation and protection for artists that I wanted to manage. I soon thought that perhaps creating an official entity and brand that can forever hold these values would be the best course of action for longevity and influence. I decided it was only poetic to name the business entity after what I sought to protect in myself and others.
To put it simply, this is my small way of working for a better future while doing something I love. Being inspired and saddened by the artist's struggle, I hope to create a place of reprieve and alleviation from the predatory practices that are so common in the entertainment industry. Likewise, I aim to help entertainment companies not only perform better through business consultations on operational efficiency, marketing, and management but also to implement ethical practices so that the growth of a symbiotic client-business relationship is made possible, and likely, profitable.
To be very clear let us go over what this company is and is not;
This company is:
- A for-profit business. This is a for-profit business, just not to the extent of trampling on ethics and morals for the sake of profit. Growth for growth's sake is the greedy ideology of a cancer cell that is both destructive and draining on the system it is present in. If my company ever is a C-Corp serving the whims of a few shareholders over the artists it represents or the entertainment professionals it hires, rest assured that I am dead. I humbly seek a comfortable life and for the values of this company to grow into an industry standard, which might I add is easier to do as a for-profit in the entertainment industry, that is all.
- A value-driven company. Before money was even a concern, the idea of this company was to develop deep, trustful, ethical, and professional business relationships with our clients to create natural, successful, and continuous growth for the company and our clients. We aim to create a non-exploitative business model that is a true win-win for the parties involved. Only reaping a commission in the form of a percentage of what we help create as opposed to paying a prescribed value and pocketing the rest as is very common in employment. Our values are Communication, Compassion, Ethics, Equity, and Ongoing Improvement
This company is not:
- A whim or fantastical vision. Years of planning and education have gone into the formation and purpose of this company. This company and all the actions following its LLC filing with the government have already been planned many months ahead and are on standby to be executed the second it is officially an LLC.
- Not a promoter of virality and superstardom. Pneuma Management & Development (PMD) sees virality as a consequence of a market's common short-term interest and a matter of sensation rather than consistent quality product/content that has finally paid off. Though accepted when invited, as we are always happy to ride the viral wave, we do not hope to curate this for our clients as we want them to have long, memorable, fun, and profitable careers. We like to promote the concept of the “Middle-Class Musician/Entertainer”. This is the type of musician that is a passionate soul dedicated to sharing their creativity in exchange for a comfortable life. They will be able to perform, publish their compositions/songs, and be a brand in and of themselves, therefore ensuring they're making a comfortable living with their music alone. This is in opposition to the current reality in which they will be robbed blind from everyone in the music business, including their manager while working two extra jobs because they will be told they are not making money while selling out theatres and concert halls.
- Driven solely by the profit motive. I cannot overstate that while the company is for-profit, it is and will never be my intention or action that will put profits above people. If still unclear or doubtful of this entity's intention, recall and/or reread the cancer metaphor until the imagery of a life-sucking manner of operation in a system is so vivid in your head you can hear the metastasis.
- Not a Talent Agency. The practice of artist management often gets mistaken for the very similar field of talent management, but they are two completely separate industries. Talent managers/agents, also known as booking agents, help get their clients jobs and usually work with well-established artists and creatives to take their careers to the next step. Artist managers, on the other hand, are advisors, guides, critics, and overall important professionals on the artist's/entertainer's team that aim to help develop, organize, and promote the artist/entertainer to the point where they will need additional members (such as touring managers, talent agent, business managers, etc) to function effectively.
The funds accrued from your aid will go directly into incorporating and running this business for the first couple of months. I am directly asking for aid in kicking off this dream. If you want a more thorough look at the business model and exactly how this company will function then you can follow the link below which will take you to an open, patent application pending 2023 business model. Note, where I would usually upload a PDF, I cannot embed, upload, or link a PDF into GoFundMe. The link below, however, will take you to a viewer-only Google Doc.
