To know Sarah King is to love her and immediately recognize her kind and compassionate soul. Sarah’s always been committed to indigent defense work. Among several of her jobs, she has previously worked at the Montgomery and Davidson County public defenders office. She’s not only been a saving grace to countless indigent individuals, she is also a savior for animals...all the animals....and has taken in so many dogs, cats, turtles (yes, I said turtles) and even abused and disabled pigs over the years. A few years back Sarah stepped out on her own and opened her private practice in middle Tennessee, which is where our paths crossed. Sarah quickly became my saving grace, my mentor, my colleague, and most importantly, one of my best friends. As a lot of you know, back at the first of the year, Sarah had to undergo chemo that was extremely hard on her physically and mentally, as chemo is for most anyone who ever has to go through that. Then..... just when she was overcoming that and getting back on the mend, a former client, a young man that Sarah and her husband Dave took in, showed up at their home, unannounced and unloaded a revolver at her, leaving her a victim of attempted homicide and completely traumatized, as anyone justifiably would be. After doing everything she possibly could to work through the trauma and the PTSD that she had endured, she painstakingly made the decision to pick up the shattered pieces of her life and leave Tennessee, the only home she has known for the past 25 years, to try and get a new start and somehow move forward. She found employment at the Public Defender's office in her new town and there was beginning to be a shimmer of light at the end of the very dark tunnel she had been thrown into. After living in AirBnBs for the past 3 months, they finally found a house and their closing date was approaching. That is until last week when all of their life savings was stolen in a wire fraud scam when sending the down payment to the title company. They found out their money was stolen at the same time they were both getting tested for Covid (although they are both vaccinated). So....now Sarah and Dave are sick with the Delta variant, quarantined in a rental property that they have to be out of today, and unable to close on their new home because every penny they had left is now gone. Most of you are probably thinking to yourself at this point, there must be some recourse, someone has to be liable, how could this happen.....all of which were the same thoughts that immediately went through my head.....but unfortunately, noone is accepting liability and the only recourse available is for them to seek legal action through the courts, which all of us know...is NOT free, definitely NOT cheap, and the process takes months, if not years......and the cherry on the top is that from what Sarah has been told by the police and the FBI at this point, is that she will likely never see the money again. This entire past year has been nothing short of a nightmare for her. I feel like she has been playing out the part in a real life LIFETIME MOVIE, it just does not seem real that all of this could have actually happened to anyone, especially Sarah, but it has. It's probably too late to save the new home they were supposed to close on, and we can't change the awful chain of tragic events that have occurred over the past year, but we can at least help them try to get back on their feet and recoup some of the money that they will realistically probably never see again. Sarah would never ask for our help, that is just not who she is….she is a Fixer, she is a helper, she is a servant and she has always been the one putting the pieces of thousands of peoples lives back together for them, but she needs our help. I believe in karma, and I do believe there are still good people left in this world, and our legal community is filled with them…lets all come together and help Sarah, just like she has helped so many of us at some point or another and so many countless other individuals that were lucky enough to have her representation.
