We are Babadin Eeyou School’s Secondary 5 class for the 2019-2020 school year. We are currently raising funds for our orientation trip next month to visit potential post-secondary schools in Montreal, Gatineau, Ottawa, and North Bay, in order to explore the options available to us after graduation.
Our school is located in Whapmagoostui, Quebec, a First Nation community at the mouth of the Hudson Bay and Great Whale River. Whapmagoostui is accessible only by air travel, so this trip will serve as an opportunity for us to visit southern cities and their post-secondary schools. This will be an amazing opportunity as the majority of us have not been to a college campus before.
All funds donated will go directly toward paying food costs for the 5-day trip. We have funded some of the cost through bake sales and other school events, but we still need to raise additional funds.
Hear directly from us about the benefits of this trip:
"We want to see the resources available to us as Indigenous students."
"We are an isolated community, so it can be a real culture shock for recent high school graduates. Being able to visit potential schools will help fight culture shock and make the transition from high school to CEGEP a little easier."
"We lack the resources of Southern students since we have to leave our communities and what is familiar to us in order to pursue studies after high school. This orientation trip will let us explore the resources available to us as Indigenous students. There are many resources to help us adjust to life down south, so we want to see what that might look like and prepare for our futures."
"This orientation trip will help us to make plans for future studies, which will allow us to meet important life goals."
Your donation can help us pay for food costs on the trip, three meals each day for students and chaperones. Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated.
