Hi, my name is Zak. I’m raising funds for my dad after a house fire severely damaged our family home on Kimberley Road in Ottawa (Bells Corners).
This is the house I grew up in. It’s also where my dad cared for my grandparents in their final years. When my uncle had nowhere to go, brought him in over 15 years ago so he could have a roof over his head and a chance to rebuild his life.
A fire started upstairs and the damage was already serious. Then it re-ignited later that night, and that second fire is what took it from “bad” to “not salvageable.” The fire department did what they had to do, but the interior, attic, and the roof were heavily damaged.
My dad has been displaced and is staying with family while we figure out what comes next.
To be transparent, we learned there was no active home insurance. My dad works as much as he can, but he has never had an easy financial runway. This is the kind of sudden event that can wipe someone out.
Right now we are facing urgent costs just to stabilize the situation and plan responsibly, including:
- temporary housing and basic essentials while displaced
- securing the property (board-up, weather protection)
- salvaging what we can and moving belongings into short-term storage
- short-term storage and transportation costs
- professional assessments and next-step planning (contractor, safety checks, permits if needed)
- preventing further damage and unsafe conditions
