Hi!
Please read the following, and if it touches your heart the way it did mine, we would be eternally happy within grateful if you could contribute.
My dear friend's mother has had the worst year of her life. Meira is a single mother that raised two boys, one of which is my dear friend, and the other remains dependent on her. Last year, she started developing pain in her abdomen and finally, the doctors decided to investigate. They found a mass and told her it was benign.
They removed the mass, and we were relieved to hear she'd be okay.
But she wasn't.
She continued to remain unwell and with further investigation they found out she has cancer.
In the winter, doctors performed an ostomy which was supposed to be temporary. This meant that part of her colon was removed, and an opening was created in her abdomen to bypass normal anatomy and evacuate stool.
She finished her round of Chemo and then she fell through the cracks of the healthcare system.
The doctor was meant to order a PET scan but forgot!
A few weeks ago, severe abdomen pain landed her in ER and tests revealed that the cancer has spread and is incurable
They have given her one year to live, even with biweekly chemotherapy, and the ostomy will be permanent.
Ostomy supplies cost, on average 200$ a month and the RAMQ gave her 433$ for the year
She has developed an ulcer around her ostomy because she can't afford to change her flange and bag frequently, let alone buy a barrier cream or protective products.
Meira told me today, "Sometimes I have to chose between food or my ostomy supplies. Just because I'm dying doesn't mean I should suffer like this."
If you could spare anything, it would mean the world to us and you would be easing the suffering of a dying woman. A big thank you in advance.
