PLPD Sgt Peter Kamper Memorial Fund

On 8/9/2017, PLPD Sgt. Peter Kamper Jr., Badge #164, was on his way home after covering a shift at the Pompton Lakes police Department. Peter, 40 out of Wayne, NJ was driving his 2001 Harley Davidson FXS motorcycle east on Lakeside Avenue when he hit a deer and was flung from the motorcycle.
It is with great sorrow that we accounce the untimely passing of our friend, our brother in blue, and most importantly one who became part of all of our families, Sgt. Peter Kamper.
He will be remembered by all of us as a large but gentle man who was there for you no matter what time of the day.
This fund, in Peter's memory, will provide assistance to the people who meant the most to him. His family.
Rest in Peace my friend, you will never be forgotten.
The Gift
I would like to thank everyone for coming and being here to honor Pete Kamper Jr. in our hour of need. I am so sorry Christine for what you are going through. You are truly blessed to have had found your best friend, true love, and husband all in one. I am so sorry Pete Sr. and Wendy for the loss of your giant of a son. Siblings share a special bond, and Pete and Mike were no different. The love Peter has for you Mike will forever be with you. Also, to all dressed in blue or whatever color you wear to serve, protect and help us, thank you and know you have a guardian watching over you.
When I was told what had happened to Pete, I did not understand why such a tragic accident could take place. As we all have been asking the same question and looking for answers. As I sat in Chris and Pete’s home the last few days, listening and seeing everyone help each other out for whatever the need was, I started to process all this. I realized then what Pete was letting me understand now more than ever, what he did the most of, helping everyone. Pete never shied away from any situation he could help out in. When helping someone he was all in, up to his elbows and more. If he did not know how to do it, which thinking back now was not so often, Pete would pull out his phone and find out what he needed to do and came up with his plan. You knew once the first beer can was open that all would be well. I would like to thank you, Pete Sr. and Wendy, for instilling the virtue of the value of helping others among all the other virtue’s you instilled in your sons. Be very proud of your boys.
I am also proud to say that my daughter Christine is also a Kamper and will try her best to follow in Pete’s footsteps. You see, when we help someone out, no matter how small or large the task is, we all are walking in the footsteps of Jesus, he who is always there to help us. When you feel lost and need guidance, ask Jesus just as you would ask Pete for help, it’s that simple. Pete walked in Jesus’ footsteps whether he knew it or not.
I do not know for sure where I heard this phrase, but I use it when I can, “After helping someone open a door, carry a bag, fixing a flat, or whatever it may be and they thank me, I ask them to simply pass it on.” This is the gift of helping. So in honor of Pete Kamper’s all to short life, pass on Pete’s gift of helping out anyone in need and feel the power and greatness he felt all the time. This is Pete’s gift to me and all of you in our hour of need, pass it on. Thank you and love you Pete.
