On October 29th 2016, we adopted two eight-week-old Labrador puppies, Lincoln and Kennedy, who had been dumped on the side of the road in Hartsville, Tennessee. We’ve always been avid supporters of animal rescue groups and felt an immediate connection to these sweet babies (siblings) from the moment we first held them. Because we’re absolute saps, we couldn’t stomach separating them and only adopting one so we did what any crazy animal lover might do and took both home, which made our two-year-old feel like the luckiest toddler on the block. Within a day, we noticed our female lab Kennedy acting weak and lethargic with an adversity to food and water. By Halloween night, we knew something wasn’t right and rushed her to the vet. We were devastated to learn she had contracted Parvovirus.

Kennedy spent the following three days in quarantine at Providence Animal Hospital receiving around the clock care by way of Intravenous fluids and medicine. She fought hard. We fought hard for her. Unfortunately, the virus had already spread into her little lungs causing Pneumonia like symptoms. She was suffering and It was absolutely heartbreaking to watch. On Friday November 4th, we were forced to say goodbye to our little angel. You would think she’d been part of our lives for years the way it devastated our family, especially our little girl who no matter how many times we tried explaining that she was gone, she continued to wake up each day asking for Kennedy and running around the house looking for her missing pup.
We were told to keep a close eye on her brother Lincoln in the coming days. Lincoln had tested negative for the virus and at this point was a happy, healthy, and energetic pup, but considering his sister was infected, there was a good chance he was as well.
The morning of November 7th, we woke up to find Lincoln exhibiting similar symptoms to his sister and we rushed him to the vet. This time he tested positive for Parvo. We immediately admitted him so we could get a head start on fluids and medicine to prevent any further dehydration. He is currently nine weeks old and 13 pounds with a 103.4 fever. We are hopeful that Lincoln will pull through this and are willing to do all that is necessary to ensure he has the best care and chance of survival.
Lincoln is currently in quarantine at Providence Animal Hospital in Mount Juliet, TN receiving Intravenous fluid therapy with a vet tech assigned to just him. Between the exams, tests, x-rays, antibiotic, anti-nausea, vitamins and boarding costs, it is roughly 450/per day to properly care for a Parvo pup.
We are not normally the type of people to reach out and ask for help, but we have extended ourselves financially, and we don’t want to be forced to make a decision regarding our puppy's life because we cannot afford to continue his care.
When all is said and done, we are expecting to pay an additional 2,000-3,000 dollars more, on top of the close to 2,000 we’ve already spent. Anything you can provide to help us keep him alive will be so incredibly appreciated—even if you can only give a dollar, we’ll make sure that dollar is spent in the best way possible. If by chance we receive more than we need, we promise to donate the remaining balance to a nearby shelter organization and pass your generosity and compassion forward.
We love this little guy so much already! Thank you for taking the time to read this and thank you in advance for your care and contribution. The bond we have formed in such a short amount of time with these fur babies has surprised even us. Lincoln is the cuddliest, sweetest, love biting pup you could ask for. He deserves a chance to grow into “Man’s best friend”, or in our daughter’s case “My best fwiend!”
God Bless.
