Chris’ story begins in 2011 when he moved to Bastrop, Texas from Florida to be with his mom. She had been suffering mini strokes and had just had an emergency operation to remove a blood clot from her brain. He quickly realized how dire his mom’s financial situation had become when she looked up at him and asked, “What are we going to eat?” Chris didn’t have an answer. There was no food or money in the house, and he had used his last cent just to make it to Bastrop from Fort Lauderdale where he had recently lost his job driving a forklift. He attended the little rural Adventist church asking for prayer the next day and immediately felt welcomed as family. That’s when my family met Chris Bristol. He had a contagious faith, and I could tell he was a prayer warrior when I heard him offer the closing prayer.

The next day, the history of Bastrop would change for ever. That little church along with 1600 plus homes and half of the Loblolly Pine forest would be engulfed in an inferno traveling 30+ miles an hour.  My mom lost everything. What used to be her home and guest house had become a tangled mess of metal on the ground. The weather remained dry with temperatures at 110 degrees. The ground smoldered for weeks. Needing both work and wanting to help, Chris began clearing scrap metal from properties beginning with my mom’s. I do not know how he survived the heat from the sun and the heat from the charred earth. It was dirty, back breaking labor. While other scrappers offered to haul the debris off for free, Chris offered to return 40% of the scrap metal recycling money to the fire victims. He would even spend hours late at night cleaning metal to get the highest yield at the recycling center.  That money really helped my mom through those difficult months. I cannot imagine how someone could be more honest or more hard working and diligent than Chris. When he came by our house after a hard day’s work, he remained positive and cheerful. I never heard him complain once.

When he was no longer needed in Bastrop, Chris returned to Ft. Lauderdale and continued to work in scrap metal. His business grew. He has been able to employ other folks who have fallen on hard times and invest in a new truck. But recently his truck suffered an accident which has left it severely damaged and inoperable.  Chris can’t work or provide work for his employees until he can afford the expensive repairs, or he is able to replace it. His fundraising goal is set at $10,000. Chris is an extremely resourceful, hard-working man and engaged to get married soon. He has helped so many others in very difficult circumstances. Now he needs help so that he can continue to serve doing the difficult, back breaking labor that he is content to call his ministry.
