Hurray! We have raised some funds toward the production of the film and Editor David Bartlett has been building out pieces of the film and restoring some of the scans of slides of paintings to go into the field. We will meet this week with Ted's son Jeremy to discuss the music he will compose and record as well as other aspects of Ted's life. Because of recent world events, I am changing the main picture on GoFundMe as this film goes wider from the lens of the Japan bombings to the horrors of war.

Ted Gilien was an American artist who painted the horrors he had seen in the aftermath of the Atomic Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He had been a sketch artist for the armed services and later published a book called The Price in which he makes a plea for peace, citing the horrors of war and the profit-making machinery behind war. The book is filled with his beautiful artwork.
Following my graduation from CalArts Film School in 1981, I began an art film project based on his book and only went as far as securing a recorded reading of the book by actor Ed Asner. I dropped the project back then as it was financially overwhelming and "life" got in the way, but a couple years ago that audio tape which I thought was lost, showed up when I moved homes! I have contracted with an editor/filmmaker, David Bartlett to finally finish the project 40+ years later! The film will have a broad collection of Ted Gilien's catalogue which I have scanned from photos, slides and transparencies, some photos from the collection at the Skirball Museum and other sources, archival film footage and photos, hopefully interviews of survivors and new filmed footage. The artist's son Jeremy Gilien, an accomplished composer will write the musical score.

NOTE: The photo at the head of this campaign is that of Invictus, a painting by Ted Gilien, which has been cropped by GoFundMe's window as a horizontal display rather than as the vertical painting in full. Here, a woman decries, with the position of the sword, "Never again".
Those of us involved in the project appreciate your financial support no matter how large or small and welcome contact from organizations who may have sources of additional funding or source material.
