Money spent on diesel for truck, Excavater and Ute. Hiring of a tipper truck for 10 days at $250 a day. Food for rescued animals. Food for his gang of volunteers. Money for flood victims which he housed for two weeks. Worked with others tirelessly 10 hours a day over 10 days. Thank you so much again

The clean-up has begun for Lismore in northern NSW as the community is left reeling over the horrific loss and devastation caused by floods. Five people are confirmed dead after the town experienced the worst flooding in its history, with the death toll expected to rise as ravaged homes are searched.

And a mammoth effort is needed to rebuild Lismore back after several days of heavy rain and rising waters. The clean-up is underway, but thousands of families have lost everything to the flood and the trauma being experienced across the community won't recede with the floodwaters.

Those rescuing and housing residents and clearing homes and businesses are the TRUE heroes emerging out of this disaster. With so many livelihoods destroyed, my brother and his team of friends and colleagues have stepped up to help those in need. Day and night, using every resource they have – including their trucks, excavators to move rubble, pressure cleaners, their bare hands – they are working around the clock to get their community back on its feet. But at a huge personal and financial cost.

Government help is minimal – yet this team’s outlay is huge. With the floodwaters impacting many areas, the authorities have stretched resources so it is up to this community to help itself. And that is what Jos and his team are doing. Residents cannot work, there is no power, no fresh water, food is scarce, and vulnerable community members need help now. There is so much that needs to be done, but Jos and his crew genuinely need help with the basics and fuel to continue this monumental task.
