Our brother, Jeremiah, is larger than life; standing 6’ 3” and over 240 lbs. He’s the youngest of our family, and the only boy. He has fiery red hair, and a fiery personality to match. He’s funny and sarcastic. He gives the best bear hugs, he’s a hard worker, and he’s extremely generous. He is strong and he is stubborn. He is our big little brother, and on Sunday, March 24th, he was in a motorcycle accident.
J was airlifted to the hospital and our family quickly congregated there. Despite all of the tubes and beeping machines he was connected to, his appearance looked surprisingly normal. Except for a small scratch on his right hand, he had no outward signs of even being in an accident. The initial relief of his outward appearance was quickly replaced by the shock and worry over the seriousness of his internal injuries.
Machines were helping him breathe and were monitoring the ever-growing pressure on his brain. He was heavily sedated and unable to respond or communicate in any way. He was a physical shell of the person we grew up with, and we could only hope that our brother was still in there somewhere.
Days turned into weeks, and when finally awoke, he awoke slowly. One day he moved his hand. Another day, he opened his eyes. And then, finally, another day, he spoke.
His progress hasn’t been linear; each accomplishment is accompanied by a setback, but each week, we see more and more of our brother’s personality return. His humor shows up every time he throws a sarcastic comment at one of us, as only little brothers can. No matter how much pain he’s in, he shows his kindness by thanking his nurses for their time. And no matter how many setbacks he has or procedures he needs, he is staying strong and fighting hard to heal.
Our brother likely faces a long road to recovery. Any amount you can give will be used to alleviate his medical expenses and support the expenses he will incur once he is ready to transition from the hospital to rehab, from rehab to a (hopefully) temporary living space, and from there, finally back to his home.
We are so grateful for those who have reached out to our family, those who have donated, and those who ‘share’ this campaign. Your positive energy and support are appreciated more than you know.
Sincerely,
Amanda, Missy, and Rebecca
