Hello,

My name is Denise, and I’ve been a close friend and neighbour to Jackie, Keith, and their beloved dog Smudge for the past 12 years.

Please know this hasn’t been an easy decision to make—reaching out for help from friends, family, and the wider community. But right now, this resilient family is facing overwhelming challenges, and there are very few options left. Even if you’re unable to donate, simply sharing this message would mean the world to us.

Jackie’s Story

Jackie was first diagnosed with ovarian cancer while after this Jackie developed breast cancer and After undergoing a mastectomy on her right breast, she was then diagnosed with stomach cancer. Incredibly, Jackie overcame both of these battles.

Sadly, her journey didn’t end there. While being monitored for ongoing health issues, Jackie began experiencing worsening symptoms and was later diagnosed with a brain tumour. Her condition quickly deteriorated, making it difficult for her to manage daily tasks or continue working.

Just as she was preparing for brain surgery, Jackie received devastating news during a routine breast check: in July of last year, doctors discovered a cancerous lump in her left breast. The brain tumour surgery had to be postponed, and she instead underwent another mastectomy. In November, she finally had her brain tumour removed and began a slow and steady recovery.

While trying to regain her strength and return to part-time work, Jackie faced yet another hardship—her beloved dog Smudge ruptured his miniska tendon and required surgery. Then, in the midst of all this, Jackie most recently had developed severe breathing difficulties and had to be admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. She is currently making slow progress, fighting hard, just as she always has.

Through it all, her husband Keith has been the rock of the family. He continues to work full time however currently having to take time off work while doing everything he can to care for Jackie and Smudge. Despite all his efforts, they are now at breaking point. Recently, Smudge became ill again, and the vets have found a lump in his throat. He now needs another operation.

How You Can Help

Jackie has not been able to work , and the vet bills have exceeded their insurance limits. The financial burden has become too much—they are struggling to keep up with basic bills, let alone additional veterinary expenses.

This family needs a break. They shouldn’t have to worry about how to pay for surgery for there beloved dog or household bills while trying to recover from so much pain. 

Jackie has spent her life caring for others , as well  as a full-time carer. She is one of the most selfless people I know, always giving and never asking for anything in return.
