On January 9th, 2022, Ethan sustained severe injuries from a ski accident. Another skier found him unconscious at Grand Targee, and he was life-flighted to Eastern Idaho regional medical center. He was intubated and remained there for two days. He was diagnosed with multiple facial fractures (he broke every bone in his face except his jaw), severe traumatic brain injury, missing and broken teeth and a broken thumb.
His injuries were such that he required special treatment at the University of Utah hospital, so he was life-flighted there. Eventually, he was moved from the ICU to a medical floor until the swelling diminished enough to do facial reconstruction surgery. Finally, on February 19th, they were able to operate. The five surgeons inserted three metal plates to stabilize the facial fractures, set and splinted his nose and wired his jaw shut. After discharge, Ethan's follow-up care has been and will be extensive, including treatment at a brain injury clinic (for PT, OT and speech), oral surgery, and possibly ocular plastics. Until his doctors clear him to drive and return to work, he continues to live at home with his parents.
Ethan is recovering well and hopes to return to work by summer but cannot begin to pay off the accumulating medical bills until then. The doctors and staff have been amazing, and his insurance has covered a lot. Still, he is looking at at least $17,000 of debt from the deductible, the maximum out-of-pocket payment and future oral surgery and therapies. Ethan is doing a great job healing his brain and body; let's help him get back on his feet.
