Our mum has been fighting severe complications from diabetes, including an infected amputated toe and blocked blood vessels. Her kidneys are failing, and despite that my siblings and I have spent nearly £15,000 or 30 million naira in Nigerian hospitals, her condition is worsening. I have been out of work since March, drowning in debt, and I and my siblings cannot afford the life-saving treatment she urgently needs in the UK.

Our mum’s health crisis began in May in the UK when she came visiting. So NHS recommended that She needed angioplasty and the amputation of her fifth toe. The NHS quoted £20,000 for the procedure, but we could not afford it as I have been out of work since March and my siblings can’t raise enough.

In May, her visiting visa had expired and there was no money to treat her in the UK. So, I and my siblings tried to save her foot in Nigeria, where treatment was more affordable. The hospital promised revascularisation , and her fifth toe was amputated as planned.

Unfortunately, the amputated toe did not heal properly due to her diabetes. By the end of August, she required another debridement as the toe isn’t healing. Soon after, she began experiencing the same pain under her foot as she felt when in the UK. The radiologist in Nigeria who performed the initial angioplasty confirmed that her blood vessel has been blocked again which is just between May to August (3 months interval) and recommended a repeat of revascularisation with a stent this time. However, said there’s still a chance of the vessel blocking again and her foot was also infected.

After this angioplasty procedure was done last week, same day she went to see the other hospital to see the vascular surgeon who had previously done the debridement, at the end of August hoping to remove the infected tissue. He could not perform the surgery because her kidneys were failing—partly due to her diabetes and the contrast dye from previous CT angio scans. She was referred to another hospital for dialysis.

Now, the site of her amputation has worsened since returning from the UK. There is heavy discharge from the wound, and the dialysis hospital has not acted urgently. They even wanted to discharge her because I refused them to perform another CT angiogram, test which was done by the first radiologist and first hospital less than two weeks and with a recent angioplasty (revascularisation and stent) procedure that was done last week Wednesday. This hospital claimed they can’t use the results of another hospital to continue care on their end and that they need to perform their own CT angio test. I am worried as it may impact on her kidney again and she is currently going through dialysis with them.

I and my siblings have spent nearly ₦30,000,000 (~£15,000) paying for her medical care in Nigeria with no improvement. I have no job, no savings, and I am drowning in debt. My siblings can’t raise enough as they are also in debts as well due to this. We are terrified of losing our mum—her leg, or even her life.

I want to bring my mum to the UK for proper, comprehensive medical care, where she can receive expert attention for both her diabetic foot and kidney problems. She deserves a chance to heal safely, and I cannot do this without your help.
