"Do Not Let My Daughters Forget the Taste of Life": A Mother's Plea from Gaza
Hello, my name is Suha, and I bring you today the story of my sister, Iman. Her words are no longer just letters; they are screams of pain that reach me across thousands of miles, from Canada to Gaza. My sister is not asking for the impossible. All she wants is to give her three daughters—Razan, Asil, and Mais—one simple right: the right to a childhood.
Razan, who is 12 years old, should be in school right now, dreaming of her future. Instead, she has learned how to distinguish between the sounds of different explosions. Asil, the nine-year-old, no longer asks about toys; she asks, "Will we be safe tonight?" As for five-year-old Mais, all she knows about the world is fear and hunger. My heart nearly breaks when my sister tells me that her daughters have not tasted a piece of fruit or meat for an entire year. Is it conceivable for milk to become a dream for a little girl?
"I am afraid they will forget the taste of normal life," Iman told me in an exhausted voice. "I am afraid they will grow up believing the whole world is just destruction and the smell of gunpowder."
Their lives have turned into an endless nightmare. Since they lost their warm home, they have been displaced over 15 times. Every school they sought shelter in has turned into a mass grave, and their survival each time has been a miracle mixed with horror. The last time, they survived a bombing of a school that claimed the lives of more than 100 people who were sharing the same shelter. Now, they are in my mother's destroyed house, a place that protects them neither from the winter cold nor from the danger of stray dogs roaming the ruins.
Her husband, Bilal, who worked hard to provide a dignified life for his family, has now become helpless. Every day, he and Iman search for a place with an internet connection for nothing other than to tell the world that they are still alive. They risk their lives for a message, for a hope.
"Hunger is killing us slowly," Iman says. "When I see my daughters looking at me with empty eyes, I feel a helplessness that tears my soul apart. How do I explain to them that a loaf of bread has become a luxury?"
I am not asking you to save a "case" or a "number" from the news bulletins. I am asking you to save an entire world... the world of my sister and her daughters. Your donations will not only provide them with food and shelter but will also restore their lost hope and will give three young girls a chance to know that there is another side to life besides fear and destruction.
Help me return their stolen childhood to them. Help me save my sister before she becomes just a memory.
