On October 13, 2016 approximately 1:15 PM my dad James Coffey (Jim) (Who is also a retired disabled veteran )was driving home from Los Angeles to Paso Robles when The suburban he was driving left the road and barrel rolled three times. Leaving him with a head injury and a spinal injury. He had to be rescued from his vehicle with the jaws of life and then air lifted to Kern medical center in Bakersfield.( approximately 110 miles away from home.) (Where he will remain for several months then he will be moved to a rehabilitation center for several more months .)
There he spent the first few days in a medically induced coma where it was touch and go for a while, we weren't sure if he was going to pull through or not. He also had to spend a few days on a ventilator. He is still on a breathing machine because he cannot breathe well on his own. He is still not quite out of the woods yet but we are hopeful. He is now paralyzed from his armpits down. He has a broken shoulder and a broken collarbone on his right side. He is going to need surgery to repair those. He still has a lot of healing to do. We have a long road ahead of us with recovery and rehabilitation.
We are asking for lots of prayers. We are also asking for donations to help with travel and lodging etc. for my mom, Teresa Coffey, & his kids to be able to visit with him. Gas and hotel rooms and food are very expensive. My mom has had to spend a few nights sleeping in her car in the parking lot of the hospital ( we don't want that, it is not the safest area to be alone in.)
He feels the most comfortable when family is around. He is a very family oriented man we love him very much. Please anything helps & everything is appreciated. I know there are a lot of people out there following his story.
