Dear friends and family,
On June 25th my Dad suffered a massive ischemic stroke to the left side of his brain. Two days later he underwent a life-saving hemicraniectomy. This is a surgical procedure where a large flap of the skull is removed giving space for the swollen brain to bulge and reduce intracranial pressure.
My Dad spent 2 weeks in the ICU at Orange Coast Memorial in Fountian Valley. He was then moved to the stroke unit where he spent an additional 7 days. He was recovering well from the stroke and had just been transferred to Long Beach Memorial Rehab Center when he began feeling sick again. Exactly a day after being transferred he was experiencing pain, a tingling sensation, weakness and numbness. Within days he became completely paralyzed and couldn’t breath. My Dad was immediately moved back to the ICU where he was intubated and after several test he was diagnosed with Guillian Barre Syndrome.
GBS is a rare rapid onset neurological condition in which the body’s immune system attacks and damages the nerve system. After receiving IVIG treatment my Dad continues to feel numb and paralyzed. He also developed pneumonia and was treated for it. He’s been hospitalized for over a month now and is undergoing daily physical therapy sessions and will need to remain at Long Beach Memorial until he makes enough progress to come home.
As most of you know, my Dad is a very strong independent person and hates asking for help. But this has been a life changing event for him and has a long, hard road ahead with lots of uncertainties.
I have been preparing for his transition from hospital then inpatient rehab to his new normal, at home. We need to make changes around the home in order to make it handicap accessible as possible for him.
Therefore I am trying to raise money to assist my family with ongoing medical care.
Donations will help cover medical expenses and work around the home. This will help him focus his energy on getting better and lighten the load that unforeseen medical emergencies can bring.
I am grateful for donations of any amount. Anything will help! Thank you and please continue to keep my Dad in your thoughts and prayers.
