My name is Ronald Taliaferro and I am 56 years old. I was diagnosed with liver cancer in early 2016. At that time I underwent chemo and the end result was that in a year there was a 20% chance of re-occurance, & in 5 years that would go up to 90% .
In December 2019, I needed a blood transfusion, then again in May of 2020. At that time it was discovered the cancer had returned. Since then I have been hospitalized 4 times for various reasons, 2 of those times were extensive stays. I am currently undergoing Radiation treatments at UVA Medical Center treating a blockage in the main artery leading to my liver, that can not be surgically removed. There also appears to be nodules below the lungs, which indicates the cancer may have spread. Once the radiation is complete the doctors will move on to assess the lungs & decide a course of treatment for the liver cancer.
I have not been able to work since April 2020 and I am accumulating hospital bills as well as struggling with monthly expenses, electric bills, food and general day to day expenses. Fortunately, prior to this posting, I had been able to take care of these things myself. However, now that it has been 6 months without work, I find I am needing to ask for help. The hospital bills are beginning to come in and it is quite overwhelming.
For example, just the local hospital bill is $113,000 with my part being $4,900. That does not include the physicians and pharmacy costs. I have not received any bills from UVA as of yet. Since this is just for treatment of the artery blockage to the liver, this will be an unknown and ongoing treatment process.
