Hi, my name is Michelle, and I'm fundraising so that I can get my debt down and the rent paid ahead, so that if worse comes to worse, my sister, Wendy, won't have to worry about being able to make ends meet.
This is hard for me because we really weren't taught to ask for help when we needed it by our parents.
We moved around growing up, as dad was in the Coast Guard since before I was born. So, it was hard to really put down roots. Friends had come and gone over the years, and seeing extended family was spotty. Especially when we were so much younger than the rest of the cousins.
Mom and dad passed away 12 and 13 years ago, respectively, after long-term cancer fights. Now I live with my little sister, who currently can't work and is on SSI due to a disease related to her Crohn's that caused her to have a liver transplant 4 years ago. I have been her caregiver for several years, now.
Myself, I have been relatively healthy, despite being overweight most of my life, and dealing with diabetes for 9 years. Then this year happened. I tripped on the sidewalk on the first day of July and broke my elbow. Off work for 3 months. Still trying to get my elbow to cooperate and bend enough (my dominant arm). I had enough sick leave, but lost 18 hours that I was going to work extra that first week. And lost some other pay using Paid Family Medical Leave.
Then near the end of October, I had gone in to get some other pains checked out, and ended up being diagnosed with endometrial carcinoma (stage 4, because it's in my lungs). Apparently, it's been slow growing over many years. It probably would have been caught a lot sooner if the doctor's I had seen hadn't dismissed the bleeding, saying that if it wasn't bothering me, then we wouldn't worry about it. Will be hopeful the chemotherapy is effective.
Now for the financials. Money has been tight all my life. Even more so recently. Wendy and I have downsized twice since our parents passed. We now are in a one bedroom apartment. But we still have storage expenses as we haven't had the mental or physical health to go through all of mom's, dad's, and our own stuff.
The apartment complex is supposed to be 'affordable living', but last year they deemed it 'affordable' to raise the rent over $300. So the apartment complex storage payments have been majorly behind. You try to get some 'bad credit' funding to make ends meet, but that's an expensive slippery slope.
I had been getting premium help with the Marketplace health insurance, because it was too expensive for me to pay a pro-rated premium through work. However, next year I won't qualify for that help because of the new amounts. Yet, that pro-rated rate is going to take a chunk out of my paycheck next year, as with my medical issues, I really need insurance. And I don't qualify for Medicaid, too young for Medicare.
I would like to get the debts paid off and rent paid up for awhile. That would reduce the stress and worry for both of us. Due to circumstances, we also don't have a vehicle, so we rent one when we really need to. That means keeping the credit card paid down.
Also, while I have been getting 'charity care' through MultiCare, it doesn't cover everything.
I would like to get these all taken care of before I'm too tired to think about anything, or too sick/tired to work.
Little sister and I.
