Hello my name is Don Gish and I am fund raising for my brother-in-law Richard Toops who is in Chiriqui Hospital in David Panama.
They took him to the emergency room this morning with terrible pain in his back. He has a Type A dissection of the ascending aorta and needs surgery immediately. The Hospital required payment up front before they did the surgery. He has Medicare but they do not accept this form of payment in Panama. My sister maxed out her credit card to get the care he needed.
$30,000 got him a surgery to restore blood flow to his legs and kidneys so he would be stable enough for transport to a public hospital in David, Panama. He was in Critical condition.
I have never considered what it would be like to travel and have an emergency. I always thought you would receive the care you needed to save your life regardless of your ability to pay. It doesn't that way in Panama.

The Doctor sent a text to Carol this morning saying the surgery for Richard was successful.
I believe he is considered stable and they can transport him to Panama for another surgery to fix the Aorta. Carol was trying to catch some sleep this morning before they transport him. It's been a long day.

After discussion with Doctor Carol sent this.
100% he will die with out 2nd surgery. His aorta is dissected all the way down. If his blood pressure raises and it splits he will bleed out. Taking 1 step at a time. Need to find out how much the 1st surgery was and pay for transport to public hospital.

So right now they will transport Richard to a close public hospital in David. They will try to stabalize him for surgery. We are waiting to hear if public hospital will accept him as goverment has to approve it. If they don't accept him I will have to work something out with finance. I will keep you posted.

They could not transfer Richard liked they planed and they were separated for more than two days.
Richard was finally transferred to Panama and they did additional testing before surgery.
The news is not good. At this time surgery is not an option. His arteries from the heart are all dissected except one. So his extremities, lungs and brain are not getting adequate oxygen. More test today to determine brain activity. His chances are only about 30%. Will give more info later. Waiting to go see him.
Prayers for both of them Please
