Hafa Adai! My name is Velma Igcasenza Mendiola (Familian Lucas/Cueto), I am 56 years old, from Yigo, Guam. I am married to Joaquin Blas Mendiola (Familian Muneka/Mayu), and mother of 6 beautiful children and 2 grandchildren.

I was recently hospitalized at GRMC, and diagnosed with a large complex solid cystic tumor in my right pelvis area extending to my right abdomen which may be ovarian cancer. This has caused Hydronephrosis in the right kidney and an urgent Cystoscopy, and stent placement was performed on my right kidney to alleviate the swelling. Also, found by CT Scan is a Bilateral Pulmonary Embolism that requires blood thinners. The tumor is too large and complex that the GMH providers would not perform a surgery to remove it. The tumor will be tested for cancer after it has been removed. I am being referred to USC Keck in Los Angeles, CA to have the procedure done and waiting on the Medicaid referral office for my travel arrangements.

My husband, Joaquin will be travelling with me and will be my support while I receive my surgery in CA. Medicaid will not cover his airfare, lodging and food expenses while we are in CA.
