On Christmas Day, the Boven family was continuing their tradition of skiing together when Matthew Boven, a sophomore at Traverse City Christian, was involved in a serious ski accident that resulted in a traumatic brain injury.

Matthew was transported by ambulance to the hospital and later transferred to DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids so he could receive care from specialists, including a pediatric neurosurgeon. He is currently being treated for a small bleed in his brain, bruising on his lung, and several other secondary injuries. Over the next few days, doctors expect increased swelling in his brain, meaning things may get worse before they get better. To allow his brain the time it needs to rest and heal, Matthew is fully sedated and under a medically induced coma. Doctors are optimistic, which brings hope during this difficult time.

At this point, Matthew is expected to remain in the hospital for several weeks. Matthew’s family, including his parents Erica and Nate, and his older sister Aly, are staying in Grand Rapids so they can be by his side throughout this time. Medical bills, hotel stays, meals, gas for travel back and forth from Traverse City, and missed work will add up quickly. Our hope is to help ease some of that stress so Erica, Nate, and Aly can focus fully on being present with Matthew and supporting his healing.

Those who know the Boven family know that they are often the ones caring for others and giving of themselves without hesitation. Now, it is our turn to give that same love and support back to them. Let’s surround this family with care, encouragement, and generosity, and remind them that they are deeply loved and not walking through this alone.

Matthew and his family are strong in their faith and are trusting God during this time. We believe in the power of prayer, and we know that with Jesus, miracles can happen. We are believing and praying for complete healing for Matthew and peace and strength for Erica, Nate, and Aly as they walk through this together.
