My wife and I inherited our home almost and property almost ten years ago, with three years of back taxes already owed. We know that inheriting a home is a privilege that few people are fortunate to experience, and we are deeply grateful for everything we received. But unfortunately, we can barely manage to afford a household at this point, much less pay property taxes. Every year since we moved in, we've used our tax returns to pay off the oldest tax certificate, but the total amount owed has always been more than we could afford. Despite our best efforts, we've never been able to catch up completely.
Things became even more difficult when I lost my job of ten years last October. Since then, I've been searching for work and have applications in everywhere, but so far, I haven't had any luck. We can barely manage to pay bills and keep food on the table as it is, and the added burden of such a sudden deadline has us paralyzed with fear that we are about to lose our home. If we do not pay our property tax by 05/28/2026, we will lose our home to a predatory shell corporation that buys up rural property tax certificates and forecloses on homeowners who are not able to pay. Now, we've received a notice of foreclosure for the tax certificate, and we're at risk of losing our home and everything we've worked so hard for.
Any donations we receive will go directly toward paying off the property taxes that are behind. We are so grateful for any support—your help means everything to us as we try to keep our home and stay together as a family. Thank you for reading our story and considering a donation.
