Hi everyone, this is something we have never done before. But, these young adults and sweet puppy need help!
My son Kieran, and his girlfriend Ashley, decided to get their first puppy together. Our family has always been very big on rescuing, not purchasing dogs, so we starting watching to shelter posts
They came across a post, for the puppy there were looking for on the facebook page Saving URGENT Lancaster & Palmdale, CA shelter pets. His name he was given at the shelter was "Benji", #A5604846. 4 month old Australian Cattle Dog. He was brought into the shelter on January 23rd as a "stray". They had him scheduled to be euthanized on February 2.
My son went over to the Palmdale animal shelter on Wednesday morning, February 1. He got there 30 minutes before the shelter opened at 11 AM. And waited patiently. He met this puppy, instantly fell in love. He was told that the puppy had been neutered, chipped, and given his first round of shots. At that point, my son left the shelter with a new puppy!
His girlfriend and I am met him at our home. We sat discussing what they were going to name him. This puppy became Dutton, after their favorite TV show Yellowstone.
Dutton has a very sweet personality. A very calm demeanor. He was eating a little bit, drinking water, normally, loved to cuddle. Seemed a little sleepy, but we kind of chucked that up to the fact they told us that they had neutered him on the 30th.
The next morning, after my son had went to work, his girlfriend was with Dutton. And said she was concerned, that he didn't want to get up, that he wasn't eating, and he wasn't drinking. This was less than 24 hours after the adoption. She called their normal vet, but was unable to get him an appointment, so she took him over to the emergency vet in Lancaster.
within 15 minutes of arriving at the emergency vet, they had diagnosed with Parvo. They immediately started treatments, got him an isolation, and gave Ashley a breakdown of what the process was going to be. This was on February 2. One Day after his adoption.
they immediately started him on medication, and IV fluids. He continued to be lethargic, vomiting, diarrhea. The second day we were told that he was showing a little more pep in his step, the vomiting had stopped, but he still had diarrhea, and would not eat. By the third day, his fever was gone, but they still could not get him to eat, so they were going to reduce some of his medication's, run a blood panel, and continue to monitor. Yesterday, February 4, they said that his blood panel came back, and that he virtually had no white blood cell count. That they needed to do blood plasma injections. That was done last night, and we're awaiting an update this morning.
these kids have literally done everything that they can do to save their puppy. Even after only having him for less than a day. They are out of pocket with the vet for almost $6000 now. Not even including the adoption fees. They want to do whatever it can take to save this puppy. And that's what we're still hoping for. But we're also realistic, and we know this might not happen.
anything that you could do would help. These young adults took the money that they have been saving, for a place of their own, a future together, to try and give an abandoned puppy a happy life. And they're still trying to do that. I would like to do whatever I can to try to help them out, so I'm reaching out to the community that I grew up in, the community that my children have grown up in, to see if anybody can help us out?
The animal shelter is willing to do nothing. I have never been more disappointed in my life. We were basically told we only neuter, chip, and give her shots. Once they leave our facility, it's your problem. It's unfortunate, because there's many other dogs that could be infected by this. And they could take it home to other animals in their house. I don't understand how they can do so little.
we have all of the receipts, I would be happy to provide them to anybody who would like to see them that is willing to help donate. I want everybody to be comfortable knowing that this is not a scam, this is a legitimate cost.
I appreciate each and everyone of you that may be able to help. Please keep praying for Dutton, we would love to still bring him home!
