Those of you who know Alayne and I will know that on Sunday the 13th we were absolutely blessed by the arrival of our baby son Fergus into the world bringing our little family of Alayne, myself and our two fur-babies Mackie and Dougal that much closer to perfect. We are just in absolute awe, counting our lucky stars every day for the joy we get to experience in every little moment.
Today at around 4pm, our first furry-love Laird MacDougal, a.k.a. Dougal or 'The Doogs', while at home - closed in the run we built to keep him safe was bitten by one of Victorias very own majestic native snakes while I (Mike) repaired our washing machine and Alayne expressed milk to feed our son.
At 4:15 we took Dougal and his fur-brother, Mackie out from the run where they waited patiently for walks. Dougal came staggering out from his favourite spot, legs wandering, salivating heavily and went straight over to his Mama who immediately called it.
Snake bite.
Dougal is a rugby ball under my arm as I sprint to the car and head out the driveway. Alayne frantically calls local vets, seeing which ones are open Saturdays. Hamilton Street Vet Clinic in Gisborne.
20 minutes later, the vet on call, Doctor Robert Payne, also from Macedon who has dropped everything and headed out the door meets me there.
Fast forward two hours and Dougal's, shaved, sedated, given morphine, barely conscious and having some miraculous serum pumped into him in the one and only effort we would ever get to make to save his life. Dougal is a tough little puppy and he begins to ride it out. Initial signs are good and I begin to cry.
Between building our family home (see Instagram: @hamiltontinyhouse) and preparing for the arrival of our son, including having 8 days of hospital around the birth of our healthy boy: The safety net has gone and we are totally unprepared for the cost of Dougals' treatment which we are told can range from $2000 upwards dependent on how well he recovers and has to spend in care.
This boy is our absolute baby and we spoil him accordingly. He pays it all back by being our rock in hard times, he's become absolutely obsessed with our human baby boy Fergus (See cover photo) and never wants to leave his side. When he met our new son he pulled this face, the same one we have seen only one other time when we brought Mackie home for the first time.
Now this part is important. I can honestly say from the bottom of my heart that I don't want your money. Even at .50c or $1 I'm embarassed to be publicly sticking my hand out. Dont give it to me, I'm an asshole and you probably wouldn't (or don't)like me but please, please.
Help me get it to Dougal.
Michael Hamilton, Alayne, Fergus, Mackie and of course, 'The Doogs'.
