Please help us reduce Nappanee's stray cats
Hi,
We're local volunteers that are working to control our rising stray cat population in Nappanee, IN. We're working in conjunction with two local cat rescues, Here Kitty Kitty and Cat Snip. Both rescues have the goal of trapping and spaying and neutering the cats that are increasing in numbers rapidly. Our hope is to provide medical care to the animals that need it and provide foster homes to the kittens that we're able to provide for while feral adults will be fixed and re-released, but no longer able to procreate.
Why are we doing this? To put it simply, the stray cat population in town is becoming a problem resulting in a lot of unhealthy animals wondering about. It's cruel to the animals, it's a nuisance to residence, and it's a problem that'll only continue to grow.
Did you know that one female cat can have up to 3 litters per year starting before she's even a year old? And an unfixed adult male has unlimited potential to reproduce. That's a lot of babies!
The rescues only have so many resources and man hours that they can provide and their focus is on the greater Michiana area, so we're stepping in to help put the focus on our community and do what we can. The Humane Shelter is over populated and most of the rescues are at max capacity. If we can help curb our local situation, we're all the better for it as a community.
We've worked with both rescues previously to curb a stray population on the west side of town near West Side Park, now we're moving on.
Our plan now, is to raise funds to start with the current stray cat colony near the Speedway in off of CR6. We've identified 3 separate litters of kittens currently, a feral pregnant female, and at least three other adults. In total we've seen about 15 cats. Most of these cats need medical attention, are infested with fleas and suffering from respiratory illness and eye infections. Providing food and water alone is not enough, and year after year this area has reproduced numerous stray litters of kittens. Too many for the rescues to handle with their limited time and staff, but they're willing to accept our help and we need your help too!
Here's the problem, the rescues can't fund this project alone. That's why we're asking for donations to help fund the cost of trapping, fixing, and medicating these animals. Our time is fully voluntary and if we manage to obtain extra funding, that money will be passed on directly to the rescues.
We thank you for your love and dedication to improving our local community and helping us work towards improving the lives of many animals now and in the future!
Thank you.
update 6/30/25: Thank you everyone for the outpouring of support! The 3 current rescues have started vaccines. We have 3 drop traps and an appointment for 7/18 to get any adults we can trap fixed at Cat snip. The homeowner who's property some of the cats are hiding in is more than ready to see the population controlled and will help when re-released after fixing. Any more kittens we can get from the 3 litters will be prepared for adoption. Keep spreading the word!
