Our One-Eyed Poppie Needs Your Help
Donation protected
Poppie is our beautiful 8 year-old French Bulldog who needs your help.
Poppie has already put us through a lot financially. Last year, on her 8th birthday, our brave little girl had her left eye removed due to glaucoma, causing extreme pressure and pain. To remove Poppie’s eye was a necessary procedure that costed $5,600 and our bill was met with a struggle. Sadly, before this operation we cancelled our long standing pet insurance as it was a strain on our families budget, much to our regret.
Although Poppie only has one eye, she is full of life! She loves walks, bunnies, car rides, naps in the sun, treats but most of all her family. She gives out real smiles and furious frowns. Poppie has super stubbornness, loves a booty scratch and has major zoomies. I could go on forever with her fantastic personality!
On 6th May 2025, Poppie became critically ill overnight and had to be admitted immediately to our local emergency vet hospital. Poppie was vomiting frequently, with blood appearing in her bile and appeared severely dehydrated. Poppie was diagnosed with gastroenteritis, but the veterinary specialists at the hospital were unable to determine the causation.
Poppie had spent 6 days at her local emergency vet hospital before being referred to the only specialist veterinary hospital in Sydney that can assist with her gastroenteritis and her aspiration pneumonia.
Over the past week, we have faced mounting vet bills after Poppie became critically ill overnight and had to be admitted to our local emergency vet. Unfortunately, we had no other choice as her condition was urgent and the total costs have now reached $12,125.
Poppie’s serious medical journey is still ongoing, but we are doing everything we can to give her the best life she deserves.
Poppie needs further examination by the gastroenterologist who can help Poppie. We have been provided an estimate quote from best to worse case scenario, $4357 to $8380.
We need your help as we are exhausting our position to provide for her the care she desperately needs now. We are reaching out to someone as generous as you, to help us afford treatment to keep our Poppie.
No amount is too small! We deeply appreciate any help someone can give to our little delight. All funds that are kindly donated will be going directly to Poppie’s vet bills.
Thank you for reading up to this point. Here is a more on Poppie’s story so far…
Tuesday, 5/05/2025, I woke up to see vomits with blood all over the house. I immediately went to my local emergency vet hospital. They performed X-rays, blood tests and ultrasounds. The vets found that her initial diagnostics showed a mild increase in pancreatic lipase and she was treated for gastroenteritis. Poppie started to have severe diarrhea with blood and vomiting blood. She refused to eat from any of the nurses, but luckily ate minimal food when being hand fed from us when we visited on Wednesday 6/05/2025. With an additional night in hospital on fluids, her diarrhea was looking as if it had made an improvement.
Thursday, 8/05/2025 her diarrhea had improved. She was gaining an appetite after a short walk around the hospital and after many cuddles, she had two small bowls of chicken. She was admitted to go home that morning, with acute onset haematemesis (vomiting of blood), anorexia and and acute hemorrhagic diarrhea syndrome (AHDS).
However, that night, Poppie began to vomit after taking her medication. I called her local vet and was advised to try again. But Poppie, continued to vomit repeatedly after taking her medication.
We made our way back to the emergency hospital at 10:45pm. She was treated with an anti-nausea injection and a painkiller injection. She was discharged that night, and we took her home. We had hoped she would stop vomiting, but she continued vomiting the next day.
Friday, 9/05/2025. Poppie was refusing to eat, taking large gulps of water and was vomiting constantly. She was readmitted to the hospital immediately that morning where investigations took place to find the cause of the sudden lack of appetite and regurgitation. Poppie stayed in the hospital for the 6 days and for the rest of the weekend. Luckily, her diarrhoea resolved however her anorexia continued. A nasogastric feeding tube was inserted into Poppie’s nose and she was fed through fluids.
Further X-Rays and ultrasounds were conducted during this period to inquiry about a potential bowel obstruction now appearing. This caused us great stress and worry as it was recommended we obtained further studies in a specialist Sydney vet hospital. Poppies’ results lead to evidence of delayed gastric emptying and ileus.
Monday 12/05/2025. Our local vet hospital helped stabilise Poppie before we began our 2 hour journey to Sydney. We said to Poppie, ‘Pops want to go into the car?’ Immediately, she was smiling from ear to ear. It was hard for her to get comfortable with a plastic cone around her head, but she didn’t care, because she was in the car!
So, here we are again! At the same specialist vet hospital in Sydney that had helped her with her eye operation. We know we are in the best hands and best care.
Today we met with the specialist vet who got out the whiteboard to help explain to us everything that is happening to Poppie.
She informed us that Poppie has aspiration pneumonia, caused by the acid from her stomach coming into her lungs from severe vomiting. Her gastroenteritis has taken a toll on her body over this last week and it has impacted her health which has esculated her blood inflammation and aggrevated her skin dermatitis.
Happily, there is light at the end of the tunnel for Poppie! Her acute chronic gut disease is mangeable. But first, we need for her to fully recover.
Poppie needs to be admitted at the specialist hospital in Sydney for a few nights. They will be able to provide her with medication, blood tests, X Rays, ultrasounds, injections, monitoring and all the medical attention she desperately requires.
These last few weeks have been a very long, emotional and stressful time for me and my family.
Any donations, no matter how big or small, will help us with medical expenses to help Poppie.
ALL funds will be going directly to her vet bills.
I will keep you updated on Poppie’s progress.
With love,
Poppie, Tink, Saff and our family.
