Our free spirited, beautiful, charismatic, and tenacious daughter, Shayla was involved in a very serious car accident on the night of November 25, 2018. She is in the trauma SICU at UMC in Salt Lake City, Utah currently fighting for her life. Shayla sustained a severe number of injuries that will need significant long term and rehabilitation care. She was sent by life flight to Pocatello, ID and they could not help her due to the severity of the injuries she sustained. They chose to life flight her to the University Medical Center in SLC. Shayla has a broken neck, a broken back in 4 places with several fractures, severed spleen, broken sternum, all ribs broken, here entire face is fractured, both legs sustained fractures in various areas, and she has a severe traumatic brain injury with extreme swelling and there were severe lacerations in multiple areas, most prominently on her head and legs. She was placed on life support and the trauma team is doing everything they can to help her live. They had to place a drain in her head to help alleviate the swelling. This continues to be an issue for her. She just got out of her first surgery on her back to assist in stabilizing her so that she can be moved. She was initially responsive giving a thumbs up and we hope to see that again. She is going to have several surgeries, including one for a tracheal ventilator and feeding on December 3. We live 3 hours away and my husband lost his job the week of Thanksgiving. We are unable to be there for her due to the financial strain it would further cause us and our other children. We are prideful people, but this no time to be ashamed to ask for help. We just want to be there for her as much as we can so that she doesn’t have to go through this alone. Anything you can give, even if it’s just a positive thought or a prayer for her, is greatly appreciated and will be forever cherished; just like Shayla is to our family.
