On Monday 03/09/20, my beautiful, smart, funny girl was admitted to Boston Childrens Hospital for spinal fusion surgery to correct a curvature in her thoracic spine. About 4 hours into what was supposed to be a fairly routine procedure, after the screws were set and just as her surgeon began manipulating her spine into place, her blood pressure suddenly spiked and the neurologists monitoring the electrical impulses to her extremities lost the signals to both legs and her left arm. The surgeon immediately stopped what he was doing and they were able to recover some of the electrical activity to her left leg and arm but her right leg remained paralyzed. The doctors made the decision not only to stop the procedure but to reverse it, removing the screws and closing the incision.
She was then sent for an MRI so they could get a better understanding of what went wrong. The MRI showed an area of damage to her spinal cord in the area of her T2 vertebrae, just below the nape of her neck and above the area they were working on. It is now believed that she lost blood flow to that area for an undetermined amount of time, the how and why is currently unknown.
When they finally took her out of the sedation, about 12 hours after she initially went under, she had no sensation in her left leg, although she could move it, and no movement at all in her right leg. She has made great strides since then, recovering some movement in her right leg. She still cannot feel any sensations of heat, cold, or pain in either leg. The paralysis begins in her chest, just below her breastbone.
I am writing this tonight for a number of reasons. One is to ask all of you to please pray to whatever God you believe in for my sweet girl to be healed. No one deserves to go through what she is going through but especially her. She is being so strong. She amazes me. Second is to ask for your financial support at this difficult time. Any amount you can donate, no matter how little, will be put towards the expenses we have incurred here in Boston, the loss of wages as I take time from my job to be by her side, and her continued rehabilitation here in Boston and once we return home.
Thank you in advance, and please share.
