Susan has worked for my dad for over 15 years as a domestic worker. She’s never been “staff”. She’s family.
Susie is kind, gentle, loyal, and one of the hardest workers you could ever meet. Originally from Zimbabwe, Susan has overcome enormous hardship to build an honest life in South Africa.
She has never asked for help. Ever.
She only agreed to this page because it is for her daughter. And if there is one thing Susan does better than anything, it’s love Blessing.
Blessing’s Story
Blessing was born prematurely on 7 August 2021.
She was born with cerebral palsy, spent over two months in ICU, and had emergency spinal surgery at just one week old. Doctors were certain she wouldn't survive.
But she did.
Today, Blessing is four years old, full of warmth and joy, with a love for music and has the sweetest singing voice.
She can't stand or walk on her own. She crawls to move and requires constant care and supervision. She currently has no mobility equipment or wheelchair to support her.
Susan’s Reality
Susan has raised Blessing alone while working multiple domestic jobs just to survive.
They live in an informal dwelling, and most of Susan’s income goes straight to rent and childcare fees at a crèche that is no longer equipped to support Blessing’s needs.
What little is left is rarely enough to cover the additional costs of raising a disabled child.
Access to proper medical care, therapy, and disability support in South Africa is extraordinarily expensive and out of reach for many lower-income earners. Susan is constantly forced to choose between basic living costs and her Blessing's essential needs.
She never complains. She just keeps going. Because that’s what a mother does.
Why We’re Asking for Help
We are raising funds to help Susan provide what Blessing urgently needs:
* Medical and therapy support
* Mobility equipment
* Safer, more stable housing
But this is also about something bigger.
Susan’s Dream
Susan dreams of creating a small, inclusive crèche in the St Francis Bay informal settlement. A safe place where children with disabilities can be properly cared for while their parents work.
Right now, there is no suitable place in her community for children like Blessing. Many poverty-stricken working parents are forced to leave disabled children in unsafe or unsupported situations simply because they have no other option.
Susan wants to change that.
She wants to care for Blessing herself, earn a sustainable income, and create a space that supports other families facing the same daily struggle.
These funds will not only help with Blessing’s urgent medical needs but also begin laying the foundation for this much-needed community support.
Our Goal
We hope to raise $10,000 to support Blessing’s care, improve their living situation, and help Susan take the first steps toward building this inclusive crèche.
From the Heart
This fundraiser is being run by people who know Susan personally and have seen the strength, love, and sacrifice for many years. We support her as much as we can, but we need help from our friends and family to really make a difference in her life.
Thank you for caring about Susan. Thank you for seeing Blessing.
Note: GoFundMe adds an optional tip at checkout which you can change to $0 to avoid.
