Hi, my name is Jorge. I'm from Portugal, and I am reaching out during one of the most difficult moments of my life. I have been struggling financially for several years, and I am asking for help from the bottom of my heart.

I am keeping some degree of anonymity and not sharing a photo because I am embarrassed about the situation I reached, and I am not emotionally ready for people around me to know. If you have questions, I am willing to answer them directly. Thank you sincerely for taking time to read this.

I am a husband and father, working two jobs, and for a long time I barely managed to keep up with expenses. To pay our bills, I began relying on credit, then taking loans to cover that credit. For a while, it was manageable, but when interest rates (indexed to Euribor) increased sharply, everything collapsed financially.

What began as temporary help turned into debt building on top of debt. Looking back, the decisions were not ideal, but at the time I saw no other option.

To make things harder, my wife has been chronically ill for the past few years and is currently unable to work. She contributes a little with small craft work, but it only covers an occasional bill. We hope she improves soon, doctors estimate it may still take some time. I have been hiding the severity of the situation from her to avoid adding stress to her health.

Sou marido e pai, e atualmente tenho dois empregos. Durante muito tempo consegui, com grande esforço, manter as despesas básicas. Para pagar as contas, comecei a recorrer ao cartão de crédito e, mais tarde, a contrair empréstimos para conseguir equilibrar tudo. Durante algum tempo foi possível, mas quando as taxas de juro (indexadas à Euribor) aumentaram drasticamente, tudo desmoronou.

O que começou como uma ajuda temporária transformou-se numa bola de neve: dívida em cima de dívida. Hoje reconheço que algumas decisões não foram as melhores, mas na altura pareciam o único caminho possível.

A situação tornou-se ainda mais difícil porque a minha esposa está doente há alguns anos e não pode trabalhar. Ela faz alguns trabalhos manuais que ajudam a pagar uma conta ocasional, mas não o suficiente para aliviar a pressão. Continuamos a esperar pela sua recuperação, embora os médicos indiquem que poderá demorar mais algum tempo. Tenho escondido a gravidade da situação para não a sobrecarregar.
