Hi, my name is Leslie and this fundraiser is for our sweet girl, Roxy. She is such a special dog. She's so sweet, loving, gentle natured, and incredibly intelligent. I have never had a dog that seems to understand everything I say like she does. Everyone loves her. She is my husband and my baby, our kids' little best buddy, and our other dog, Lola's best friend.
So, here is why we are asking for help. In May, I took Roxy to the vet for her check up. Everything was all good until the vet looked in her mouth. My heart sank as she said there was a growth on Roxy's gums on the upper right side and that she felt like it was most likely cancer. I was devastated. I couldn't believe that my baby could have cancer. I told my husband and we told our kids, who were devastated as well. We got her in for surgery to debulk the tumor and do the biopsy on it as soon as we could. A week later, the vet called me about the results. She told me that unfortunately it wasn't good news. Roxy has cancer. My heart was broken. My thoughts were reeling with stories I've heard about dogs having cancer and their owners having to spend $20,000 or more on treatments, only to end up losing them in the end. We don't have that kind of money, so I felt like I was definitely going to lose my baby girl. However, hope returned when I read the lab results. Her cancer is called Acanthomatous ameloblastoma. It said that the cancer does not spread to other parts of the body and had a 0-4% chance of recurrence with surgery. My girl will be ok if I can get her the surgery! My heart sank again when I Googled the average cost of the surgery though. Maxillectomy surgery averages about $5000-$7000 and that doesn't include the $1500 CT scan that she would need before surgery so that they can clearly see where the cancer is before operating. We don't have that. Luckily, I heard that Ohio State has more reasonable prices and grants that can help with the cost of treatments, so I took her there. The cost of her surgery there will be around $3500 with the CT scan still at the same price of $1500. Unfortunately, they currently do not have any more grant money to give out and don't know when more will be given. This kind of tumor is aggressive and grows fast. In less than a month, it looks like it has grown back entirely where the vet debulked it during the surgery for the biopsy. I need to get her the surgery as soon as possible. Waiting for more grant money to be available is just not an option. When I was worried about the cost at her appointment, the resident that we saw suggested that I make a GoFundMe to get help because he had seen many people get the help they need with it. So, that brought me here. We would appreciate so much if you could help us save our girl. We love her so much and we can't lose her early to this awful disease.
