Please help us ease the burden for Sherry Smith

Happy New Year !!!

My name is David Smith and If you’re reading this then you now know that my wife, Sherry Smith, has been in treatment for the past 13 months for a type of cancer named Multiple Myeloma. This is a cancer of the Plasma Cells in her bone marrow. When Sherry was diagnosed shortly after her bone marrow biopsy on December 1, 2022, her Plasma was 90% cancerous.

Treatment started for her 18 days later and continues today. Sherry’s cancer is now in remission (stopped multiplying) thanks to the daily Chemo pills and weekly Chemo injections, Infusions, and sometimes whole blood transfusions, all orchestrated by Dr. Danish MD and accomplished by the wonderful staff at his facility here in Flint, Michigan.

On the brighter side of this daunting medical diagnosis, Sherry has been accepted by the U of M and C.S. Mott’s Childrens Hospitals in Ann Arbor to receive a STEM CELL transplant in early February of 2024.

This transplant will come from her own STEM CELLS, daily flushed from her bone marrow into the bloodstream via injections at home, then harvested from her blood and frozen while in Ann Arbor. This procedure is then repeated over what usually takes four to seven days to collect the required volume of frozen STEM CELLS needed for the transplant procedure.

After the necessary amount of STEM CELLS captured is completed and the days of collection are over, Sherry will then be admitted to their hospital, given a large dose of Chemo to kill all they can of the cancerous Plasma cells residing in her bone marrow, and then redevelop her now washed-out immune system with the reintroduction of the captured STEM CELLS.

This treatment is truly a God-Sent opportunity, and we are eternally grateful for it, but with it arrives unexpected expenses. The treatment is not fully covered by insurance, as well as, the fuel expenses to Ann Arbor and the potential hotel stays.

Between the Transplant procedure date and today (12/29/2023), there are another 14 hospital appointments in Ann Arbor through the months of January and February just to get everything checked and cleared.

In her recovery, Sherry will continue to be hospitalized in Ann Arbor for two to three weeks, then discharged to further isolation at home for another two and a half months.

All help will be appreciated.

Thank You,
David and Sherry Smith

  • From Stacy Lucas, Sherry's niece. For all of those who know my Aunt Sherry, you know the absolutely incredible woman that she is. She always has a smile on her face and is the 1st to step up and help anyone who needs assistance. If you were involved with St. Mark's church and school you definitely know how important she was to the church, school, sports and her work with the children that she dealt with during her time there. She is a fighter and is determined to beat this disease and lead a long, fulfilling life. If you're able to contribute, that would be great - if you're only able to say a prayer for Sherry, we greatly appreciate that!!!
