Hello - I am setting up this fundraiser to raise funds for my uncle. He is 57 years old and has been aggressively battling cancer.
His story is as follows...
In August 2021 he experienced some vague abdonomial pain that came and went. My aunt being concerned urges him to go to the hospital and be checked. He has never had any serious illnesses in his life and feels it is unnecessary to worry. She urges him to go and so he does. An Ultrasound of his liver and Gallbladder, where the pain was, shows there is something suspicious in his Pancreas. Interestingly, Ultrasound is not meant to study the Pancreas at all and this finding is a miracle to begin with. This finding is mostly ignored by his regular doctor but another doctor in the family finds it concerning urging them to do a follow up CT scan of the area. We are now speaking Canadian Healthcare and standing in line waiting for days for any such thing. With much effort the CT is finally done confirming the presence a tumor in the body of the Pancreas. Thus far the positive caveat is that it is discovered early and can be removed in its entirety. And enters again the Canadian healthcare and another 3-4 weeks for a Surgical time provided for this operation.
It is now November 2021 already as he undergoes the the surgical removal of the tumor and a significant amount of his pancreas. He is told that it is unnecessary to undergo Chemotherapy treatments immediately, despite receiving multiple professional opinions from other doctors. They agreed to follow up again in January. During this time, he is told his cancer cells remain low.
In January 2022, another CT scan revealed that there were now tumors that had spread into his liver, and he was diagnosed with stage 4 liver cancer. He is finally starting chemotherapy nearly 10 weeks after his surgery.
By April 2022, his cancer cells continued to grow while undergoing treatment, a CT scan shows the cancer has spread to his stomach. As his body wasn't responding to the chemo, he starts researching alternative treatments and agreed to undergo treatment in Phoenix, Arizona where Immune Therapy of cancer is being used.
In May 2022, he arrives in Phoenix, Arizona and begins treatment. He is promised that he would get better. His cancer cells around this point is at 4000.
In June 2022, after the injection of chemo agent directly into the tumors in his liver, he begins to develop liver failure and jaundice with yellowing of the eyes and the skin. The tumor blocks the bile tracts in the liver and he needs drains put into the liver thru the skin to decompress them. His cancer cells begin to increase, and he is falsely told that this means the treatment is working. Despite his health growing worse, the individuals responsible for his treatment keep telling him that he's getting better and that his condition is improving. He begins to develop an infection on top of everything from all the lines and tubes.
In July 2022, his liver condition worsened. He experiences extreme jaundice (yellowing of the skin and his eyes), becomes extremely weak and eventually has high fever and chills. At this point, he is brought to the ER of the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, AZ. He underwent a biliary drainage procedure that cost another hundreds of thousands of dollars. He is told at this point that he only has weeks to months left to pass away. Due to the severity of his condition, he could not jump on a plane and fly back to Canada - it was an emergency situation and required 5 surgeries.
In August 2022 he is finally released from Mayo Clinic and flies back to Canada. At this point, Syrus can no longer walk or fend for himself anymore. They go to the hospital immediately after arriving, and the doctors cannot help him. His cancer cells are around 80,000 at this point. Still, we remain hopeful that he will start to get better and can continue chemotherapy treatments in Canada. Doctors wait to see if his condition improves to see if he can start chemo again.
In September 2022, he was hospitalized. At this point, he is unable to eat, he is unable to walk any form of step, and I watched him use all his might to swallow a little bit of water. The hospital confirmed that he has gotten worse, and his cancer cells have exponentially increased since he last had another blood test 2 weeks prior. He is now placed on palliative care. He wished to be at home, so with the support of my mom and my dad, my aunt took care of my uncle until the end of his life.
September 25 was the last time I heard my uncle speak. He fell asleep and no longer woke up. On September 27, 1 day after his wife's birthday, he passed away. We watched him suffer that night, struggling so hard to breathe.
My aunt has no means to cover his medical bills. I have reached out to multiple entities to request a donation, including his former place of work and both my younger cousins school. No one has reached out to me yet, but we patiently wait.
We are asking for any and all donations no matter how small to help save this man’s family. It is possible. They have drained everything they have into these treatments, he has nothing left to help them survive - we are desperately asking for anything that could help - the stress of the money is adding on as well, as they're frugally living to put everything they have to just survive until the end of this month. We will continue to post updates - please share, donate or both. Anything works...please help us spread the word.
Our family is so grateful for anything, and we appreciate you for reading this and helping out.
