Hi, my name is Patti Weber and I am Tony Piazza's Mother-in-law.
As many of you know, Tony retired in September 2022 after a long, exciting career in Hospitality. He was ready!
He and Andrea had always dreamed of retiring in Mexico and had chosen Merida, the capital of the Yucatan as their destination. They started on their new adventure in October, though it wasn't a great trip. Tony was pretty exhausted the entire way, with Andrea doing the driving on the approximately 4,000-mile journey from Ferndale. They thought it was just Tony decompressing after working two jobs, 16 hours a day, five days a week.
Upon arriving in Merida, he didn't feel better and was losing lots of weight. Nothing tasted good, he had no energy and just felt bad 24 hours a day. A visit to the Emergency Room gave them a devastating diagnosis. Tony has End Stage Renal Disease. They realize they will have to return to the United States for lifelong dialysis care or hopefully a kidney transplant. Presently he is so ill he is unable to travel and has been undergoing dialysis in Merida.
Medical care is excellent here. Tony was in the hospital for 3 days and treated wonderfully, but here they have no insurance. Everything is CASH, and though it is a fraction of the cost of the US, three dialysis treatments a week are adding up very quickly. He still has many specialists he has to see for further life-saving measures.
Andrea is caring for him around the clock and is unable to work. The medical costs are using up the majority of his pension. To save costs they are staying with me and family has helped. They're so appreciative.
Tony must continue with the treatments to stay alive.
Their lifetime dream has become a nightmare.
